Black or garbanzo beans would taste way better.
If you go a Chinese owned boba place in Sydney (I haven’t tried elsewhere, so I won’t comment on that), on the fillings you can is a kind of tiny red beans that actually go well with your drink.
Sounds like adzuki/sweet red beans. I’ve seen it in boba shops here too (west coast USA), but not all of them have it.

That's not boba, that's 紅豆冰 ("Red Bean Ice", I can't believe this is actually how it's translated). This is more common in Hong Kong, like boba in Taiwan.
