Sorry… is hectoring supposed to be heckling? Trump is the hector in this case; he can’t make Canada the hector. When the first non-proper-noun word out of a writer’s keyboard is that far off what they meant, I have difficulty taking anything else they write as anything but regurgitated vaguely understood hearsay.

I never said it wasn’t a word; it means bully. But hectored doesn’t mean bullied the way we use that in English—it would mean to create a bully.

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Nope. It's an out-of-use term, but it is definitely a synonym of bullying.

The link to the "ing" version in their first link does support the use in the article. TIL also.

[–] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 0 points 1 year ago

Hectoring is to act domineering, or to try to intimidate.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ackshually it's only Hectoring if you drag them behind your chariot, otherwise it's just sparkling heckling.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That reminds me, Troy deserves a rewatch soon. Love those fight scenes.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn't that movie notoriously terrible?

For whoever is interested in reading it, I quite liked the Peter Green translation. Fair warning though, it's quite long, longer than the Odyssey.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Oh I wasn't saying it was a good movie. It does have a greased up Brad Pitt flying through the air stabbing dudes with a spear though. Sometimes that's all you need from a film.

If you mean "go vote to change things" or something along those lines, then I need to remind you that only people from USA can vote in the USA elections and that not everyone you'll find online is from USA. Have a good day.

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Canadian election is today. Who they choose is who's gonna have to handle or succumb to Trump.

[–] kami@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago

Good for Canadians then, I wish them the best.

I was addressing my fellow Canadians, because the Canadian election is today. Ironically, it seems you assumed I was an American talking about the USA.

[–] kami@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago

No, I simply assumed your comment was referred to me since that's who you were answering to.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lol too late for that bucko, you think free and fair elections are gonna happen in the US?

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Pretty sure they meant Canadians

Yup that makes much more sense sorry

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He literally said he was not trolling.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 0 points 1 year ago (5 children)

And even in the most insanely charitable world where we assume he is "trolling", he's still saying an intensely offensive thing to Canadians without any reason other than "lulz." That's the most charitable possible interpretation and it's still awful.

Of course, most Americans don't realize it's an intensely offensive thing. That's a major part of the problem.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

"America is the greatest nation on earth, why wouldn't another country want to be part of it?"

That's what happens when a population is spoon-fed "patriotism" from birth. All the nationalism and propaganda is doing its job promoting American exceptionalism while diminishing empathy and critical thinking.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

No way in hell would I want to be part of that dumpster fire shit hole.

[–] Eril@feddit.org 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Reciting every day in school how great your country is, is peak brainwashing to me. When I learned about that, it was so weird to me.

As someone who lives in America, I don’t understand how anyone DOES NOT think it’s offensive and threatening and a horrible stance for a president to have. But the ones that don’t think it’s a big deal is how we got where we are and I’m disappointed in my country… again.

[–] CmdrShepard42@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

I wonder if Musk taught him this trick. He keeps pulling it out of his ass every time negative news (that he actually cares about like his recent polling numbers) comes out and he wants to distract from it. This is exactly what Musk used to do before he took the mask off.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 0 points 1 year ago

Don't confuse not knowing with not caring.

How about you worry about your own shithole country.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm actually kind of glad to see this. Should drive turnout for Carney.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I can't think of a more helpful thing he could have said.

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (10 children)

Should drive turnout for Carney.

Ah yes another liberal who’ll fail to defend our countries borders, another Trudeau but this time with pizzaz.

If there ever is a war with the US I sure as shit want access to real firearms, none of this 3 rounds per mag headache we got now.

[–] ZC3rr0r@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

And how, pray tell, is a "real" firearm going to help defend against the most technologically advanced army in the world, who can take you out from half a planet away without you ever seeing anyone until you are ginsu-bladed in half (reference: https://www.pcmag.com/news/us-used-drone-carrying-knife-missile-to-kill-al-qaeda-chief)?

We don't need more firearms in personal hands when it comes to our national defence, we need alliances, a better standing army, and probably some form of nuclear deterrence. Thinking you'll make any meaningful difference with your personal firearm and a couple of hours on the gun range is the exact same magical thinking 2FA nuts keep using while the US government takes their rights and freedoms away.

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago

And how, pray tell, is a "real" firearm going to help defend against the most technologically advanced army in the world,

Their tech is pretty advanced I’ll give you that, but i sure as hell know if people had more access to firearms we could actually have a chance to defend ourselves from such a threat.

Our military is a joke technology & armoury wise, simple and plain, the more people who stand to defend the better.

We don't need more firearms in personal hands when it comes to our national defence

This is where we differ, I fully believe South Korea has the right idea to train all their children in CQB and to safely handle firearms given how close North Korea is.

The same should apply to Canadians, we have a potential threat down south and a small handful of people actually know what they’re doing.

we need a better standing army, and probably some form of nuclear deterrence.

I 100% agree however, I don’t think we’ll ever see this in our lifetime with another Liberal leader.

Thinking you'll make any meaningful difference with your personal firearm and a couple of hours on the gun range

A couple hours at the range is better than no hours at the range.

[–] ijedi1234@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago

You misunderstand.

Yes, one Canadian with an assault rifle can't do much against 5 American drones.

But one Canadian with an assault rifle can do much against 5 off-duty American soldiers relaxing in a restaurant.

He is not trolling. He is genuinely threatening our sovereignty, and we are taking that seriously. The United States is an enemy nation.

[–] shiroininja@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Are you guys arming yourselves via a rearmament program like pre WW2? Because you should be if you take him seriously. The best don’t tread on me animal is a porcupine. Defensive

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (4 children)

If the US invades, there's no amount of rearming that would stop them from completely destroying us. Acquiring nukes would be our best bet.

I'm keeping my cents on the Simpsons timeline.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If Canadians seeing this can take anything from the last few months, it's that they have got to get out there and vote.

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

“Don’t you want empty ports too???”

[–] lostoncalantha@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Big beautiful ports. The biggest ports.

Can someone slap this guy already?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Best I can do is slam

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Doomberg says he thinks he wants Carney to win, since the only way a pipeline is getting built to Europe is if a left leaning government does it.
