Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s former opponent in the U.S. Senate primary, Haley Stevens, stunned party officials Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers after Democratic tensions boiled over days before the election that could determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Stevens endorsed Rogers after attending a Detroit church service with him. The remarkable show of support for Donald Trump’s backed candidate in the tightly contested race comes after she was uninvited to a joint event the same day with El-Sayed, who defeated the congresswoman by a slim margin in the August primary.

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said video announcing the endorsement. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said video announcing the endorsement. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Wow what a shitty reason to endorse someone.

Childish as fuck.

Edit: also, am I crazy or is El-Sayed not even a leftist? Dude is literally a landlord. So much of this is just veiled racism.

The Overton Window in this country is so fucked.

I just watched his 60 minute interview and I’m not sure. He definitely is “on the left” I would say that he is really harping on his faith so I think he’s trying to look more central. He was dancing all over the place and bending over backwards to justify his positions without saying he’s a socialist. He kept saying explicitly he was a capitalist which like no, bro you’re a worker just like everyone else who isn’t a big dog running industries but I think he’s doing that bullshit pander to the middle thing that Dems love to do so it’s really hard to pin down where he lands. Given the options in his race I’d vote for him in a heartbeat but I didn’t finish the interview especially impressed and several times I was thinking I could have given a better answer than he did… idk he’s the one to win that race but I can’t really tell where on the left he falls

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

The guy and his wife own several rental properties. Including one in Dubai if reports are to be believed.

Obviously, he's the best of the available candidates in that race, I just take issue with him constantly being labeled a leftist. It just seems like more racheting of the Overton Window to the right.

[–] Kazel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 hours ago

What muricans see as left is normal ground in the rest of the world

I mean he says he supports medicare for all, but yeah could be a center right politician in Canada

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

He has clarified when asked that he is a capitalist. But there's a solid enough contingent of the American electorate that thinks tax systems are a leftwing policy.

[–] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago

Vote Blue No Matter Who.

Unless you lose a primary to one of those icky anti-genocide types, then you have to be realistic...

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago

She says she is doing it for "country". Everyone thinks that country is Israel.

I would like to think even more would have resigned if we had universal Healthcare

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 42 points 1 day ago

The video on that article had a great response from El-Sayed at the end, when the press was asking about his response to questions about Stevens and if he knew about her endorsement ahead of time. He basically said he understands that getting answers like that it what drives clicks but ultimately it doesn't matter at all, and that he wished the press would focus on issues the local electorate cares about like prices and wages.

This should be top. Already rightfully expelled.

All the people bellyaching at the top should take note- blue no matter who and proven.

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 24 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I don't know that I've personally been bellyaching about the top, but as someone who refuses to donate to the Dem party and only donates to candidates directly, this is really great to see. I've been disappointed in the past by the party's behavior, and this is the kind of behavior I need to see in order to be brought back into the fold.

Zionist occupation of the Democratic party has a long history that does not seem to be very well understood by the general public.

I'm very confused on what's happening here. Not that another establishment not-Democrat went full mask off, but of the odd timeline of this.

So this woman lost the primary months ago to Abdul El-Sayed. She stays quiet and/or pushes milquetoast support for the progressive Democrat for those months, even though it's clear she's full on AIPAC supported and has a conservative husband.

Then these last few days, well after a lot of Michigan already voted with early polls, she decides "fuck it we ball" and outwardly and directly decides to endorse the GOP candidate on the ballot? Did something happen behind the scenes? Did she have a mental break? The strategy makes no sense from a sabetour perspectives behind the scenes (she went mask off too early... 2 days too early) nor from a campaign perspective (she went mask off WAY too late for it to matter for the GOP candidate). This can't have been strategic.

Israel came to her in a dream again.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 9 hours ago

her zionist republican husband di.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Oh right. It's that lady.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

when you follow the $, there's a connection between her husband and $ getting funneled to collins. he appears the be the one calling the shots not her

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

I think it has a lot to go with the new polls that came out today

Centrists and establishment dems have been seeding the narrative for a while that an AES win would be a lot closer than what a middling and corporate/zionist friendly candidate would have done in his place, but that's hard to argue when he's showing a 15 point lead in his race as compared to D+10 races in other competitive states

Steven's is making herself the villain of the week in order to cut down his lead and undercut any potential narrative about left populism being electable in 2028

So basically what the establishment democrats did to Mamdani here in NYC. Gotcha.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 125 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Democrats would rather dance with Nazis than back progressives in their own party

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 79 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Nazis.

Here's an article from the same month Mamdani won:

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3841636-house-passes-resolution-denouncing-socialism-vote-splits-democrats/

The resolution overwhelmingly cleared the chamber in a 328-86-14 vote. The majority of Democrats — 109 of them — voted with all Republicans for the resolution, while 86 voted against it and 14 voted “present.”

I don't think these guys just said this and didn't plan to sabotage any social democrat campaigns.

Their Israeli handlers told them to stop El-Sayed from winning by any means necessary "or else..."

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 9 hours ago

she was there to sabotage his campaign, she took too long to act.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 112 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That should make everyone who voted for El-Sayed positively sure that they made the right choice. A vote for Stevens would have accomplished fucking NOTHING. She is one of those greaseball representatives who does not represent her constituents, but acts solely in her own best interests. (Bribes)

I don't live in Michigan, but I donate $10-15 a month to the competitive Democrats running for Senate. I usually hate those fundraising emails and prefer to donate on my own.

But I got one from El-Sayed after this bullshit and sent him $50. Fuck Stevens. Apparently helping Israel bomb children is more important than keeping Donald Trump from destroying our democracy. And she has the gall to say after her endorsement, "I'm still a proud Democrat." Go fuck yourself.

Democrats need to take some responsibility for the perception that they are not meaningfully different from nazis.

Haley Stevens may as well be working out of a GRU information warfare center in moscow, since she's basically russian propaganda in action.

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 43 points 1 day ago

Especially because leftists and progressives have been pointing this out over and over again while centrist establishment democrats condescended us.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 32 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My friend if you think Russia is behind Haley Stevens wait until you hear about this country called Israel and the money they’ve been openly throwing around this election.

Remember, this is not real news. She's a loser. She lost. She means nothing, and her opinion means nothing. And that's OK, no worries, it happens in politics... But the pundits want to make it an issue so voters forget about the issues that matter (health care, education, clean water, ending wars, etc.).

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She's sadly not nothing (yet). She still has 2 months in House and there can potentially be some last minute bills she screws over.

in 2 months, sure. She's nothing and she can fade into history as yet another turncoat in America's descent into fascism.

When I stopped laughing because El-Sayed has inadvertently flushed out another pretender just by being himself, I realized I wasn't surprised.

Stevens' fiance has been stumping for Mike Rogers all along, and while people of differing politics can and do get married, it takes a LOT of passion to go out and actually work for a candidate, which he did and still is. For me, it's not so much a red flag as a question mark.

But then there was the ad that attacked her own side, and its follow-up of her desperately trying to make something out of nothing, low-key harassing El-Sayed until he simply disinvited her to his upcoming event.

And now, the day of his event and standing outside, she's thrown off her cloak and shown her real allegiance.

If you look at what she has said and what she has brought, it's pretty clear she was only ever a Republican in a Dem suit anyway.

tensions boiled over days before the election

Yeah, no. That's a very fact neutral, implied "both sides" way of saying she kept trying to throw El-Sayed off his game until he threw her out, and now she's just attacking openly. Not a lot has really changed here.

Now I'm wondering how much cash I'd bet on finding out her campaign was planned to this end all along: to either win and then switch sides, or to lose explosively before the election in such a way that it cratered her opponent's chances.

In the end it doesn't look like she's succeeded in anything at all, beyond showing her own true colors.

Everyone in the room screeched at this woman and still she shot herself in the face.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Her career was being a puppet for Israel. This action proves her loyalty and will gain her more support from the AIPAC lobby in the future.

[–] Nokkelost@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Wow, she might have either fucked over her own party out of spite or fucked over her own political career.

[–] trevor@lemmy.blahaj.zone 56 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I get it was a bitter primary. I get she has strong feelings about certain foreign policy issues.

But holy shit, she will be unwelcomed anywhere in Democratic politics forever with this BS. If El-Sayed wins, maybe people will forget in a few years. But if he narrowly loses, she will be a pariah forever. Has she deluded herself into thinking everyone will still talk to her and this will be just a minor point of disagreement they just avoid in their chats?

And it will surprise nobody that she'll go independent and make friends with all the right wing fascists just like John Fetterman. It's all about her and the attention she's going to get from it.
