doesn't lead toxicity cause aggressive behavior? Seems like a pretty bad mix. Almost like you could hypothesize a correlation between our current political climate and lead exposure.

Wouldn't it be crazy if we could solve a big chunk of our political issues by just banning lead in stuff?

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well, problem is that it's more of a slow time release thing with lead in the brain. We're still dealing with the fallout from lead in paint and water pipes that were banned decades ago but it takes a while for the lead to leech into the brain, so they don't tend to get dumber and more aggressive until later in life. So the people touching lead ammo will probably get worse as they age. Of course there could already be significant overlap with the lead paint and lead ammo people. In which case they're probably just fucked.

So it might help, but it will take a lot longer than we'd like.

We are still seeing a net decrease in crime from the ban of lead paint and lead in gas.

It doesnt just fall off within 6-12 months of stopping exposure. The decline in negative issues from lead exposure can take generations

I'm not surprised. People don't even wash their hands after using the rest room.

[–] CaptainMan251@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh shit. Is that why my eye is read?

Jesus. Look through my post history and it will all make sense.

I gotta stop posting here first thing in the morning -_-

I said in one of my posts something like "this is house my cat sits"

How. The word was how. I said house. I made her a house sitting. And now my eye is a reader.

I've stopped stressing over perfect grammar and spelling myself. I go for 90% accuracy, that's good enough.

You're supposed to wash your hands BEFORE using the rest room, to avoid getting your genitals dirty.

Since a few people in the thread seem to think lead ammunition is illegal in the US, it’s not. It’s only illegal for shooting waterfowl nationwide, and entirely banned in the state of California.

[–] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)

it would be weird if a historically common ammo type was illegal for a reason as silly as health, that would be like making using leaded gasoline illegal

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (4 children)

I think the irony would be in legislating the material bullets are made of because of health concerns. The purpose of a bullet is to kill.

[–] brlemworld@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago (3 children)

And not to harm the person shooting it. Lead does that.

The receiver, not the owner. And also it doesn't kill him but turns him dumb. But you'll also breath vaporized lead in, washing does little to prevent that.

That still makes them the recipient of the bullet.

Just want to clarify CA bans lead for all hunting, but lead is still legal for any other purpose.

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 32 points 1 week ago (29 children)

Shooting firearms is messy and dirty. You get all kinds of oils, fouling, lead, particulates on your upper body and hands. If there's no room at the range, I go home, clean my guns up depending on how much shooting was done, then wipe up and shower. My hands are visibly soiled after shooting a few dozen rounds.

So that's why red state MAGAs seem like they're brain damaged.

[–] AlSweigart@lemmy.zip 9 points 6 days ago

Cop brain is a real thing.

"Wait... It's still lead poisoning?"

"Always has been..."

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (6 children)

Only 65 people out of 1630 people who shot in the past year reported not using lead ammunition? As someone who grew up hunting waterfowl, where using lead is illegal in the entire US, my mind is blown.

[–] bluelander@lemmy.ml 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Non-hunter who enjoys shooting as a sport: it's rare that I encounter non-lead ammo.

It seems that hunting has way more restrictions but I've never been to a range where most/all of the ammo sitting around wasn't lead.

I grew up fishing using lead split shot sinkers. The common practice is biting down on them to crimp them onto the line. Lead is still the standard. I don't want to think about how much of that is in my system.

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I always put a condom on my gun for extra protection

[–] CocaineShrimp@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I live with an individual that doesn't have the strongest immune system. While their immune system isn't great, I've opted out of going to the range for the time being. I'm sure there's a good way to make sure I don't cover them with lead; but I can't be bothered risking it for a few hours of outside time

There are lead warnings on every box and every safety manual but you just can't fix stupid.

[–] bloviate@lemmus.org 2 points 5 days ago

You know, I don't think guns are very safe.
