Wow! It's amazing what a totally obliterated military can do.

IEDs are cheap and easy. This will go one as long as they want. Nothing can be done about it now.

Once you use mines, you have to assume there is always mines. Oil prices will never go down now. Insurances companies will see to that.

This wasn't even an IED, it was a projectile per the article.

Iran is a large mountainous country, with tons of places to hide launchers, all within range of the strait. And unlike Afghanistan, it's a very well educated country capable of producing its own sophisticated weapons. There's a reason Russia of all countries turned to them for help against Ukraine.

These aren't improvised explosives, they're carefully engineered. There's a reason why the west has long avoided direct confrontation with Iran, most recognized the tar baby situation a war would cause. They're not some country utterly reliant on cold war stockpiles to conduct war.

tar baby situation

Wow, that is the first time I’ve seen that word used in the non-slur sense.

[–] deeprlyeh@lemmus.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

I understand. What Im saying is regardless they can keep this up indefinitely through far cheaper means. No amount of destruction can stop it, military intervention cant stop it, nothing can. Until they are done.

  1. IEDs are not being used in this war so far

  2. You can not use an IED sea mine. They need to meet some specific engineering requirements to be effective

  3. Evidence indicates this was a projectile attack, not a sea mine as Iran claimed

Once you use mines, you have to assume there is always mines.

Correct, which is the incentive for Iran to claim this is a sea mine. They would like ships to believe the Omani route being used by US CentCom is mined

Im speculating on the possibilities and the futility of the use of force.

It would seriously take very little work to disable a ship with small mines, IEDs, whatever you want to call them. The Cole took serious damage as a war ship with a small craft and IED.

Even the threat, possibility, or sheer greed will drive insurance companies to raise rates.

Guess I picked the perfect time to switch to electric

[–] stopforgettingit@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

The ship’s 21 crew members were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

All I care about in the article

How deep is the Strait? If both Iran and US keep sinking ships, how long until it becomes in-navigeable?

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The question is, how many of the large ships like tankers and container ships are there? Not something you replace next week.

[–] meat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Roughly 10,000 tankers worldwide, with about 1,000 active at any one time.

Yeah, looks like the shipping lanes are around 300ft deep and 2mi wide.

[–] SleeplessCityLights@programming.dev 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They will refloat a ship and tow it to be salvaged. Even a cruise ship will fuck the environment if it breaks up underwater.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

No it won't. The amount of bunker fuel they carry is relatively trivial compared to the amounts we usually recognize as an environmental disaster

Don't get me wrong, the fuel is terrible for the environment, just nothing on the scale of humans fucking up the environment. The engine(s) alone on VLCCs will harm sea life for miles

I've been diving near cruise ships and near shipping channels. The ships are so far away I can barely see them on the horizon at the surface, but when they blow their horn, it fucking hurts down to my bones if I'm under water

Submarine SONAR pings are a magnitude more powerful

They salvage the ships because that metal is fucking valuable, and anyone can claim salvage rights to it

[–] SleeplessCityLights@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you agreeing or disagreeing? Because harming the sealife for miles means fucking up the environment. As you said even the hydraulic fluids from the engines are very harmful.

[–] nforminvasion@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

They're disagreeing because you implied it would be salvaged out of some environmental concern. But they don't give 2 fucks about that. It would be salvaged because money is everything and they only care about making profit.
