When I was a kid my parents didn’t let me use a lighter to light fireworks so they gave me a lit cigarette instead.

[–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 35 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Me too. "It lasts a lot longer and isn't nearly as dangerous since it isn't an open flame," they told me.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They sell punk for this. They look like incense sticks without any scent. Just a smoldering slow burning stick, used to light fireworks with.

[–] Canajan@piefed.ca 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mosquito coils work excellent as well.

They do now. For those of us that still speak the old magic, we know that a lit cigarette was the original punk.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

I think I just remembered something similar

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I once found a full pack of cigarettes on the ground at age ~10. I quickly figured out that lighting it on fire and using the cigarette to set off fireworks was so much easier than using a lighter. I didn't even think of smoking it, I just left it lit on the ground and used it as a lighter.

I didn't understand why my parents were so worried when they found out lol.

I like how they have the same haircut

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

It was one of six you could choose from back then. That was it. Only six haircuts to choose from. /s

The Dorothy Hamill cut. It was huge after the '76 Olympics:

I had a crush on Susan, the new girl in the 4th grade, a redhead with that cut. I threw up on her shoes, once. She never talked to me.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 40 points 1 week ago (11 children)

I was second-hand smoking two packs a day until I was 13 (when my mom got lung cancer). But back then, every kid I knew was doing the same. Now, seeing people smoking is a relatively rare occurrence.

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago

Yep they smoke with windows rolled up in the cars, and in the house. Hell it was rare to find someone who didn't smoke. Then they got all shocked when we all picked up the habit as well when we got old enough to do so.

Luckily for my kids I quit when they were young and yeah I don't really know anyone who smokes cigarettes anymore.

[–] lukaro@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I was a grown ass adult before I knew how awful cigarettes smelled simply because I was always surrounded by smoke I just thought that was how the world smelled.

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I knew it stank, hated that shit growing up. But I didn't realize just how fucking godawful it was until I moved out. My stuff reeked for months, or years if it was stored.

I'm old enough to remember coming home from bars with my clothes reeking, even though I never smoked myself.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Oh god that must have sucked and sorry about your mom.

Man, to a non-smoker the world must have smelled like ass back then.

My dad was made to quit by my mum in 1973 when they had their first. By my birth in 77 I was really only around smokers at parties or friends houses.

Still didn't stop me picking up the habit mind you, but I course corrected lol

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And smoking in bed 🛏️ 🚬

I'm a school bus driver and a majority of my colleagues smoke. Some things will never change.

That leather coat mom is wearing is fucking fire. Wonder how much a real leather jacket like that would cost today?

[–] Viridian@lemmy.sdf.org 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

🎶 It was acceptable in the 80s 🎶

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 8 points 1 week ago

Still acceptable in Vietnam. Shocking to me, a tourist.

[–] Ninja876@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I remember @ 7-8yo going to the local convenience store with a note to buy my mom cigarettes.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When I was a kid in the '70s there were cigarette vending machines everywhere. If you wanted to smoke, you could smoke.

I imagine any adults with poor handwriting did not benefit from this cigarette home delivery system

"Nice try, Timmy. You clearly wrote that note yourself"

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Same. Hell I remember wearing a Benson&Hedges sports cap (oxymoron if I heard one...) up until the age of 16, despite having never smoked

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

I remember that. It was so annoying. Her brand smelled awful. The ones I smoked were way better.

[–] Pudutr0n@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

those things ppl use to quit vaping?

[–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Back before cigarettes were bad for you. See? No warning labels."

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Hold the smoke deeply in your lungs -- it's the best thing for you!

And then your fingers stank for an hour.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago

But at least she never got a yeast infection

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How the hell could someone smoke cigs in the 70's and not be able to grasp it in their lips while using both hands?

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not lady like. That's old man smoking.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 6 points 1 week ago

All the cool kids held their cigarettes pinched between thumb and second finger. None of this first and second finger V-shape weakness

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm old, the most offensive thing about this is that indestructible percolator.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On the stove? I believe that is for gravy.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I like the cut of your jib.

Dorothy Hamill haircut. So popular back then.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Good God that kid looks like me. I had that same atrocious bowl cut.
