Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
This is so super badass
She looked like my wife.

(Posted with permission.)
(Oh also my wife is still alive, she’s still is/am, thankfully, and I will be devastated when she isn’t.)
Well there's a niche cosplay idea for her! Just need a stack of paper in the back of a wagon
OMG YEAH
Holy shit, she does!
She's really beautiful, you're lucky
Fun fact: I'm face blind, so every time I see her is the first time. <3
That's so sweet! You guys are adorable.
She's beautiful!
That caption is not completely correct. That is the code that she and her team wrote, not code that she wrote by herself.
It would be absurd to think she wrote that amount of code by herself. It doesn't stand up to a moment's consideration. I can give you a couple of obvious reasons.
First, it would take anybody a long time to write that much code, but it was quite literally a space race. They simply wouldn't have one person doing something when a team could do it faster.
Second, that is all mission-critical life-or-death code. You have to suffer over every line of code to make sure that it isn't going to kill somebody. The last time I checked, which was admittedly about 30 years ago, in the space industry, a developer was expected to do something like 12 lines of code per day. Even if they could do more back then and each page was a day, which again, would be far more than acceptable for this type of code, that stack has got to be way over 20 years worth of work. She would have had to start when she was like 13 years old.
Further details, her specific team had 100 software engineers on it, and the broader apollo computer system team that she helped manage had 400 software engineers.
That stack is literally the culmination of hundreds of developers' work over a period of 8 years. She absolutely should get credit for herding all of those cats and being the one making all the big decisions, but it's insulting to the hundreds of engineers, many of whom were also women, to claim she did that all herself.
90 is a lot of years. May everyone be so lucky to live until 90.
.. in good health.
Almost all of the men in my family didn’t make it it to 50 going back 3 generations..
No one of us

RIP, Thank you for all you did.
May the legend rest in peace.
She deserves to be a Great Person in Civilization alongside Grace Hopper and Carl Sagan
One of the very few people to appear as themselves in an official Lego set. (Qualifying the statement that way because Mark Hamil, for instance, has appeared in many Lego sets, but as Luke Skywalker or the Joker.)
She worked in a tough field - when women had it even tougher than they do today. Awesome lady.
To add on, "worked" is an understatement. She was the one that coined the term "software engineering." One of the main founders of the field.
While 90 is a decent number of years, it really goes to show how young the field really is. How many professions out there have most of their practitioners' lives overlapping with those of its most important founding figures?
RIP to a titan of the profession, history will recognise her achievements long after all the systems we maintain stop running.
What an amazing woman. Thank you for sharing this article, OP. It was very touching to read this story. I feel sad that she has passed away.
RIP to a legend
This is back when computing was mostly done by women
Amazing she was wicked witch of the west actor AND a computer scientist
Oh damn, sad news.
