I used to believe racism in the United States was overstated.

Sure, it existed. But it's not something widespread. Common. The claim americans are racists is ridiculous.

Well...I was wrong.

"Zohran Mamdani is a terrorist"

"Mamdani supports ISIS and HAMAS"

"New York City faces sharia law"

"Mamdani wants to MURDER jews"

The amount of shit published about this guy is absolutely insane.

He recently attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony.

At some point, he greeted congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and smiled for 5 seconds.

Immediatly, politicians went wild

Senator Ted Cruz:

Congresswoman Mary Miller :

Speaker Mike Johnson:

Here is the video. You can clearly see that he was stoic. He hugged her. Then he immediatly went back to being stoic.

Dude smiled 5 SECONDS in a 5 hour ceremony and they accuse him of celebrating 9/11

At the same ceremony, JD Vance and Howard Lutnick laughed and joked.

No one cares. They are white.

The US is more racist than I ever imagined.

America isn't the way it is because of Trump.
Trump is the way he is because of America.

[–] SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 23 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

It's more like "Trump didn't shit on the floor, he just raised the carpet the turds were already there." IMO

[–] JGrffn@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, I agree there were turds in the carpet already, but Trump absolutely did shit on the floor, whether figuratively or otherwise....

I dont think this is true. The people in power are racist assholes and they own all the media now. So the average american is innnundated with lies. If all you hear is one side of the argument then you will believe that side. That is human psychology. The people in power know that which is why they use this tactic and why it is so powerful.

[–] speckofrust@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 weeks ago

Fucking finally. Yes!

Social media is a caricature. It doesn’t represent reality, don’t buy any of it.

But the racism is real, deep, and more subtle but scary. It’s shit said behind closed doors in my family, and that has left terrible imprints on generations.

Ted Cruz is the Senator for the State of Texas. This isn't a fringe county clerk in Mississippi.

He is one of the 120 most powerful people in the US. Senators have more power than representatives. The only people more powerful than a Senator are the President, Senate Majority Leader and Supreme Court.

What he says absolutely matters.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 28 points 2 weeks ago

“I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other colleagues like Ted Cruz. And I hate Ted Cruz.”

White culture in the US is very sensitive to overt racism. they really detest it. but if you let them, with a nice little cloth to hide behind, they will be the most grossly racist people you've ever interacted with. every news story about ICE harming brown children warms their hearts, as long as they don't have to see it or do it, or be told about it in a public place, that would be embarrassing.

Edit: dear white culture enthusiasts, feel free to keep telling on yourself, I'm here for it.

[–] Freeposity@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (9 children)

This is so true. I grew up in the deep south and everyone in my family was racist save for one uncle. All the rest, except for my dad believed they weren't racist. My dad was the most honest of the bunch. He was deeply racist and he would talk openly about it with us. We argued for years, but it never got loud.

But the weird thing is my dad could also recognize that racism was used by the Republicans to get people to vote against their own financial interests. And one really weird thing is when my dad died, he had several black and Latino friends who were devastated by his passing. They never knew he was racist. He didn't have a problem being friends with other races he just genuinely bought into white supremacy, but without all the hate. He was a weird guy.

My other family members, however, will insist they aren't racist while simultaneously saying that most Muslims are terrorists, Hispanics are lazy and Blacks are dumb. They vote against "socialist" programs they like because "those minorities and illegals will just use it all up and make us go bankrupt."

I live as close to Canada as I can and wish I realized when I was younger that I should emigrate. Now I'm too old.

Occasionally I will go south for business or to visit and it breaks my heart every time. The racism is so deeply ingrained that most people down there don't see it, but once you do see it, you can't unsee it.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

That's also been my experience. Most racists that I am aware of think that being a racist means that you are a "bad person" and since they are not "bad people" they can't possibly be racist.

I would argue that there are many, many people who are racist to their very core, but they're not evil or bad people. You don't have to hate to be a racist. You don't have to murder people or burn crosses on their front yard or hang out with rednecks in white bed sheets to be a racist.

You can have friends of other colors and invite them over for dinner and go to games with them and treat them exactly like you treat every single other person around you and still be racist. You can sleep with people of other colors, spawn children with them, and raise those children in a happy family, and still be racist.

Racism is not an action. It is a belief.

If you believe that people of other colors are different from you in anything other than melanin content and possibly a handful of relatively minor bone structures, then you have at least some racism in you.

But explaining that to your family over Thanksgiving dinner is incredibly difficult and at best unproductive.

[–] Freeposity@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Racism is not an action. It is a belief.

I'd say it's a spectrum of belief and behavior or actions. For example, people can do racist things without realizing it.

It has been my experience that the people who are less honest about their racism tend to be the worst.

Being in the south already fucks with your head. I'm convinced that a lot of the hyper religiosity in the white south is overcompensation for the sin of slavery. You can see it in a lot of the laws they make trying to downplay slavery because it hurts the feelings of white kids (and makes white parents uncomfortable). They know it was fucked up but rather than fix the systemic inequities that exist as a holdover of those days, they'd rather keep the inequities, tell themselves racism is long gone(except for those democrats) and pat themselves on the back.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (7 children)

I agree. Like, I'm Native American. Brown skin, black hair, the whole works.

I myself realized that I was being racist to black people. I would start talking in AAVE when I met them, because I had the preconceived notion that that was a way for me to ingratiate myself into the in-crowd.

I never used the N-word, I do want to be clear about that, but I did not act like myself around the black people that I was familiar with.

The funny thing is, when I realized I was doing that, I stopped doing it, and then, I actually developed real friendships with black people instead of just acting friendly with them.

People can tell when you're being authentic. My fundamental core is not racist (at least as far as I am aware), but I practiced racism out of self-ignorance.

I'm sure there are other areas where I carry racism, and I'm working on it when it presents itself.

racism is also an action and a belief. you do acts of racisms, like stereotypes of pOCs in media, that is an act of racism, hate crimes, racist media messaging.

Racism is the cornerstone of Republican power. its why they are so hostile to anything that threatens racism, like education, and empathy, and moral values.

As President Lyndon Johnson once said.. "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Yeah. Thought we were kinda winning the war against homophobia, racism, and all that.

Before trump.

But then trump showed up, and he said he was going to drain the swamp. He accomplished that feat. Every horrible human being living in the slime at the bottom of the swamp took a big breath of air, rose up into the daylight, and make their presence loudly known.

I had no idea the seething mass of willful ignorance, hatred, selfishness, and racism existed as deeply as it did here. It was like people all took their masks off and said “Here I am, and I hate every good thing you stand for.”

I felt this way seeing how they treated Obama during his tenure. There was so much bullshit mudslinging, and at one point I said to myself: oh, it's simple racism.

Funny, because my biggest complaint with him was that he didn't address some of the worst abuses of the Bush years.

so i would have said that the degree of racism was exaggerated like 10 years ago, but as it turns out, there was more shame involved with being racist but when trump declared he’s bringing open racism back, they all fell out of the wood work like they could finally breath after decades, and they are going to fucking tell you about it.

Let's all take a moment to remember that a lot of racist online accounts were unmasked as bots from Russia and other foreign countries.

Not saying that bigotry doesn't exist IRL in the US (as an American myself I can confirm it absolutely does), but don't judge a country by what its "citizens" are saying online.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

This is very true, BUT also consider that they're enabling and rallying the actual racists here to join together and fight for racism.

I mean — immigrants and people of color, especially balck women, have been shouting at us for generations that we are a racist country.

We started as a racist country, we inspired other countries to be racist (al la Jim Crow inspiring Hitler).

We’ve ALWAYS been this racist, it was just that for a little while people were a bit more quiet about it.

I just think white people are really good at pretending bad things aren’t happening all around them, just as long as it’s not to them.

We still have sundown towns and cops still pull people over for DWB. Also, the Supreme Court ruled this year that ICE is allowed to uses their racism as justification to stop someone and detain them.

Conservatism is a bigotry-based ideology. All conservatives believe in a made-up social hierarchy in which they are at the top, with only conservative billionaires above them. This is the mechanism by which all conservatives are bigots.

Conservatives are unable to see any problem with this imaginary hierarchy because conservatives are biologically unable to experience empathy for others. This is why overt racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry come so easily to them.

Conservatism is the very definition of evil. A conservative cannot become normal. They cannot change and become non-evil. Once you understand how truly, deeply evil conservatives are, it becomes immoral to keep any relationship with a conservative. Disown them.

Don't use social media as a gauge of racism in America. That's just shallow attention grabbing shit.

The entire government has been structured in racist ways, leading to racism in not just education, and goverment, but medical research, employment, Healthcare in general, housing, property, insurance, and the list goes on.

They intend to make the target of their racism look bad in any light, hypocrisy be damned (and they don't actually understand hypocrisy. If they do bad and don't get punished, its because they are good people. If the Other does bad they must be punished, because they are bad people).

You must live in New York. Most of the United States is still extremely racially segregated. As in, most people live in neighborhoods that are almost entirely people of their own race.

It is tribalism. If every person was of white, northern European descent they would still find some angle to split it into "us vs them".

[–] deadalus@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 weeks ago (11 children)

Am European, can confirm. It's then about gypsies and literally anything that differentiates the cultures (Like Jews in the time of/before WW2)

(Tho that's mostly overshadowed by the insane islamophobia everywhere nowadays)

My ex-wife's grandparents lived just outside Chicago. Her grandfather used to hang out at the local mall, because he wanted to practice his Spanish by talking to random Latino families that passed by. He was so casually racist, that he would occasionally have someone threaten to kick the shit of him over something he said...and he had absolutley no idea why they were even mad at him. And I'm not kidding, he was probably the sweetest old man you're ever going to meet...would give anyone the shirt off his back, and genuinely didn't mean any of it in a negative way. He was just so saturated in white privilege, that had no idea that most of the things he said were completely inappropriate.

As a Canadian, I always marveled at the idea that he was "one of the nice ones". That if you put him on one end of the racist spectrum, there was an entire range of people out there, that were progressively worse than him. And in US culture...this was just "normal" behavior.

It's always been this way. I grew up with islamophobes, and basically anything they didn't like they would label as Islamic in order to attack it.

[–] CardboardDecoy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Look up the history of municipal swimming pools, thr actual history of healthcare coverage jn America, and any statement about welfare in the US since Reagan's been in office.

America will cut off it's own legs mid-femu if it means keeping black people from having anything in this country. I was so late to the party in realizing this too but we literally have nothing in place for commhnities or broad social programs in this country because racism has always been leveraged to keep it out. Any time something good was proposed someone said 'what if a black person benefits' and then we never heard about it again. It's not the government that's racist either they're just using the same trick that's been working since reconstruction.

Been hoping more recent events have been showing that at least a good majority of the racism will die with the boomers. Gen X still doesn't realize what they've been hypnotized with their entire lives but it's not too late for them to come around. Otherwise we gotta wait for them too to make it meaningful.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

A lot of this is racism of convenience. Many people have no particular deep seated resentment of his racial heritage, but he's from the wrong side of the culture war, so they are willing to adopt the resentment of others. It's still racism, and it's even more disingenuous and unprincipled. They live in a world build of denial and lies, and everything can be bent and warped until it fits their per-conceived views passed down to them.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm listening to a podcast for about 10 years. I care less and less for it, because the people in said podcast slowly drift off into... Not a rightwing pipeline, but a boomer pipeline. I don't know how to describe it. I didn't always agree, but the takes are getting so bad for my taste. Still, i didn't imagine them hating on Mamdani, but never even mention trump for example. And it's such a weird dislike. Ah yeah, now we rich people pay more taxes? For what? To do good? Stupid. Like they low key just hope he fails and i'm sitting there thinking: what's wrong with you? You have an audience and a microphone and never mention that your president is a pedophile, but hope that his supermarket that is affordable for poor people in new york fails?
