Shitty that AI is getting in on the grift now, but this just sounds like a fucking idiot getting fleeced. I have zero sympathy when people get scammed by shit like this.
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
I mean it's ultimately a human pulling the strings instructing the ai how to act and what its objective is. Now they just have a new attack vector and easier time adjusting language and potential to target more victims easier...
I fully expect to start hearing about personalised scams, using AI to mimic the voice or even the image (via video call) of people's loved ones, in order to get the mark to send money urgently. Old scam, new tools 😞
If they had the money to invest a quarter of a million into something they did not understand, I would not call them victims. Idiots, maybe, but not victims.
Eh, if you have savings, and family you can borrow money from, and a line of credit, then a quarter million is doable.
People who fall for these scams don't invest only what they can afford to lose, they invest all the funds they can mobilize.
Fictions? It's easy to make a mistake isn't it. We could all be victims in the right circumstances. We can feel compassion and demand more severe punishments for banks that facilitate it (like in my industry) where everyone in the chain has to give the money back and/or give up the id of the party they gave the money to until a culprit is exposed - the victims bank refunds the victim, the bank the money was transferred to returns it to the victims bank, and so on. Where there is a will, there is a way.
