Doesn't matter. Another Chromebook os no one is going to buy at their own will
Because they plan on everyone being a thinclient to the cloud in the future.
Even ARM doesn't lead x86 on power consumption enough anymore to use a mobile OS instead of a desktop OS.
Add that we have high power USB C charging everywhere for our phones it's no longer a challenge when I do need power (about once a day) with a 2019 laptop.
That is definitely not my experience with a newer x86 ThinkPad vs something like my Pixel...

The fact that Microsoft hasn't already made an optional Clippy front end for Copilot further proves that there is nobody with any level of competence left at Microsoft.
The flavors are "Tracker, Bloodhound, Passport, and ID tag".

Lack of competition breeds slop
It's not even a competition thing anymore. It's corporate ecosystem lock-in and humanity's aversion to change even if it means staying in the most abusive techno-fascist relationships in recorded history. If the bar of entry to Linux was lowered into the floor with an objectively better experience, people still won't switch until something forces them to.
So they didn't learn shit from their W8/windows phone failure. Hell, W8 would be refreshing and competent in comparison to W11.

Microsoft's been trying to drop win32 support since at least Win 8, remember Windows RT?
They don't want it to be an open platform anymore, but they know they have to bait everyone including business into it, and they'll have to go hard and fast once they think they have the sell.
If they fuck it up bad enough they risk everyone switching to compatibility layers and hardware emulators like wine/dxvk and fex.
Even just holding that position for a year or so could fuck them. In the meantime everyone would be switching, app devs would be targeting compatibility layers. Once they've already bought in elsewhere its a LOT harder to get them to bite again.
So after Chrome has failed, Microsoft wants to try the same?
They (Google) didn't fail at the education market. I've not seen that "start them young" has been effective for the OS, but services/ecosystem remain contagious beyond school.
Microsoft did. Windows 11 SE was way too heavy to run on Chromebook-esque hardware... Even single tasking was dreadful. Before that, vendors like HP (Stream) sold a near Chromebook equivalent with Win10.. similar problem, but 11SE was worse. So this new heap is likely their next run at it or WindowsRT 2.0.
Chrome OS is dead, that's a failure.
Google is replacing it with Android.

It was supposed to be phased out entirely this year, but it's delayed until 2034.
Still the decision was made to phase it out already a couple of years ago.
Tbf, it sort of makes sense, because web technology is easily transferable to another platform. Its one of the reasons i considered MAUI.
Also, lets face facts: browsers consume so much memory right now that axing UI frameworks and libraries made in a lower level language might win some of it back - especially when you see how much memory the windows desktop stacks eats.
I could even see user services run as WebWorkers, just to sandbox those services and tie it all together.
Although Office 365 is kind of trash in the browser, that too can change if the whole desktop goes web.
But in the end: Microsoft Chrome OS. No thanks. Now a libre desktop based on browser technology? Servo, even. That would be weird and wonderful.
