Of all the hypocrisies, I think I'm most bothered by the fact that conservative strategy these days is nearly 100% identity politics

Did you expect them to sell themselves based on their identity and then to come at their competitor with arguments based on ideology? Of course they're making this about identity.
To an identity hammer everything is an identity nail
Always has been
I'm more concerned about the current oligopoly of Christians in office.
they're very good at pointing the fingers while pushing their religious agenda into law
Republicans straight to point. It wrong, but straight.
Except when their Grindr match notification sound goes off, then not so much
The match rarely goes off, mostly just hounding, even if you have a completely blank profile, some 60 year old dude will message you, like no even if I were desperate, I could literally just holler in a Walmart parking lot for a bit.
they tried that with mamdani, its not working anymore. people, that live in the real world know, that Muslims arent scary. Also its getting very old and overused.
The worst part is it works on a not insignificant amount people who identify with both parties.
yeah, fear is a very easy emotion to manipulate. the third Reich knew this and every despot after and before.
Still reeling from a moment from a McCain rally where it more or less went:
Woman: "But Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim!"
McCain: "No ma'am, he's an upstanding American. I don't agree with his policies, but he's a good man."
The implication of course being that those are mutually exclusive things.
I am from MI and still have alot of friends family, and aquentinces in MI. I can confirm the lonely, rural, BFE, swear he is a Muslim from Iran despite being a doctor from Dearborn, MI. They are terrified
Good. They should be. Their entire world view on socialism, caring for others, and brown people doing nice things is about to completely implode in real time. Everything they've been told, everything they've believed, everything they completely commit their every life to is about to change. They may have to gasp have some introspective on how they view the world outside of their bubble.
That must be fucking terrifying.
I read something somewhere... Sometime. The gist of it was that, to some people, their personal beliefs, they are so heavily vested in them, so completely inside a bubble, that anything that threatens that bubble evokes an emotional response akin to a fear of death, because in a sense, if they give up everything they ever believed in, they die. That self has to die to accept reality. And for some, for many, that deal is simply too tough to take, so they double down. Humans get set in their way, and sometimes with extreme stubbornness, and the older they get the worse it gets. At some point, you've invested so much of who you are into your whole life that is has become you. If anything threatens the cohesion of that maze of emotions and thoughts, they react with visceral fear, or aggression, to protect the integrity of their whole sense of self and personality.
Death of ego is a scary thing. Especially in a group, and one you depend on for your survival.
Shit, sorry if I'm rambling, there was an interesting thought in there, it's a bit Freudian but it's a thought I've mulled over for a long time.
And now on to our most important kitchen table issue: do you condemn Hasan?
"I want affordable child care, school, infrastructure, and more walkable cities."
"Communist."
I'm a straight guy, but his promises are really turning me on.
Me: republicans are fascists.
There are no Republicans anymore, they're all MAGAs now.
As long as they aren’t evangelists I dont give a shit.
Jesus, the wealthy should count their lucky stars we only want to tax the motherfuckers.
Speak for yourself, a lot of us want the MoP.
I've tried, but I can't figure out MoP. Not even with the help of the Internet.
Means of Production
Jesus how long have I been on Lemmy yet couldn't figure that out. For shame me.
Give it time.
Is it a good thing that this is all they have.
Or is it a bad thing that it will work.
I keep remembering that even as Germany and japan were being pounded into the ground during WWII, and unimaginable suffering was occurring, large portions of their populations still widely supported Hitler and the emperor. And were ready to die for them.
This meme illustrates both fundamental campaign strategies.
Progressive Democrats offer a platform, some specific policies they seek out to move forward.
Republicans stick to slogans, culture war issues and demonizing political opponents with thought-terminating clichés.
In my experience here locally, rural area in the southern USA, I haven't been hearing anybody harping on the Muslim angle in person. Certainly not even a tiny fraction of the amount these people did and still do with Obama. Now, I don't follow these folks online to see what they're posting there, so I'm going solely by the comments they are willing to take offline and say in person.
Obviously this is a fickle cult and the boogie-man du jour changes faster than I can keep up, but pretty much since primary season started, they've been going hard and heavy with "Communist". Anything that's in direct contrast to the Trump and Republican agenda, communism. Every problem in the world is due to communism. Well that's a lie. But obviously the prior boogie-persons du jour are too (trans, immigrants, fact checking). Everybody that does not like what's going on in this country is a communist.
There's a DINO Republican running under the Dem ticket in a district close enough to mine that I get opposition ads online and in streaming stuff -- they're even calling him a woke Communist supporter. The Dems in his area aren't terribly fond of the guy, his policies are all middle of the road centrist Republican aligned with the exception that he is a staunch Trump opponent. And yet that D beside his name on the ballot is enough that they're trying to hang those buzzwords around his neck -- woke communist.
Having said that, my new number had been added to some kind of seemingly Christian Nationalist text group (presumably prior to me getting it, but who knows?). I didn't notice for a while because I just ignored the texts. Then one day I was cleaning out all the random mess and decided to look at what was being sent. Yes, those folks are very much anti-Muslim, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the the "He's a Muslim" being pandered to that crowd.
Michigan has one of the largest Muslim population in the country so he has the best chance there
If it stands between whatever Trump is shitting out of his diaper mouth on a daily basis or convert to Islam I lean heavily towards the latter, if only it wasn't for my raging alcoholism due to the former
