It's likely that Homer didn't author the Odyssey, but rather wrote down the oral tradition that already existed.

It's likely Marge did the actual writing and let Homer take the credit.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

He was thinking of calling it "all work and no go on adventure make Odysseus something something"

If Marge was the author, large potatoes would feature more prominently in the story.

Oh yes, please tell me more about this oral tradition of the ancient Greeks! ;)

It’s also uncertain whether Homer was even a real person himself.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Would the name Homer not just refer to the person/people who wrote these stories down or is there more to it than that?

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 10 points 3 days ago

possibly-- Homer may have been an actual person, or the name may just refer to an amalgamation of people who compiled many myths and legends, passed down for generations through oral tradition, to paper, once and for all.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

My good friend, this hulking dude who only has one eye, said that no one wrote it.
