Anyone remember the Panama papers?

[–] mrodri89@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's crazy how much corruption is on full display. I guess that's one of the only positive things about the internet lately. We can see the whole world is going through it. All the time.

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

The internet has also made a suziable part of the population billionaire defenders.

That journalist in Malta does.

Or she would have, had she not been murdered with a car bomb.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Putin was all over those. But we went straight into a Russian Reset under Obama, regardless.

Almost as though corruption is a feature, not a bug

*in the US. Norway has charged Thorbjørn Jagland and in the UK Peter Mandelson and the Andrew formerly known as Prince were arrested, plus a number of other countries have criminal investigations ongoing. All so far for corruption rather than sex crimes but that's probably a function of what's easier to prove in court.

[–] jestho@lemmy.zip 92 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the Andrew formerly known as Prince

this gave me a good chuckle

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 19 points 3 days ago

He was released quickly. He and the diplomat were only arrested for leaking state secrets. GHCQ couldn't even pretend to give a fuck about the kids, rapes, murders, etc...

[–] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 68 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Andrew formerly known as Prince

Iirc, that was for sharing state secrets, not for being a pedophile rapist.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 50 points 3 days ago (4 children)

On the one hand, whatever sticks. On the other, WHY can’t we somehow make child sex trafficking charges stick?

[–] NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 31 points 3 days ago

Because when the top people presiding over sex trafficking cases look in the mirror, they find 14 year old girls attractive too.

Andy was released after 11 hours. The british "police" keep tradesmen in jail longer for having a utility knife on them.

Don't worry, they'll get to it once the Panama Papers are dealt with 😎👍

[–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 31 points 3 days ago

Wouldn't even be a far fetch to believe one of the reasons nothing happens around the Epstein papers are the assassinations of journalists who investigated the Panama papers…

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 78 points 3 days ago (3 children)

And they say they can't catch criminals if end to end encryption exists. All this was over email in plaintext with their primary addresses.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

You're not distinguishing between "can't" (e2e) and "won't" (the obscenely rich).

Advocating for them (the government, whatever team they happen to be on) acting on the Epstein files is like asking a toddler nicely to punish themselves. It is not in their best interest to do so, because it hurts their main benefactor, the owning class. The only way to have a shot at this happening is if the government is no longer owned by the owning class. To get there, you'd need to get rid of a number of things:

  • the threat of capital flight ("if you do something I don't like, I will take my gizmo factory elsewhere")
  • the ability of the owning class to shape the opinions of the electorate through owning the media (social and legacy) they consume
  • the ability of the owning class to legally bribe politicians ("if you do this thing I like, you will get a cushy job at my gizmo factory, or I'll pay you 500k to talk at my event for an hour", also super PACs)

Until you get rid of all this, no one (on any side of the aisle) will ever do anything about the epstein files, no matter how many parades/protests you do. Your collective votes do not weigh up against the three points I mentioned. See also the Panama papers.

Oh and voting doesn't work to fix the three points, because the three points ensure that most candidates (on either side of the aisle) do not benefit from doing anything about them, and the ones that do don't have much of a shot at winning (see point 2).

You see why they rather bomb Iran than deal with the Epstein case

Ok, but what happens now? Are these people arrested? Are they removed from their positions? Any actions are taken by you or somebody else? Any protests? No? So, why they need to sweat?

As long as these criminals are staying in high power, they do not need to worry. And honestly, you are a fool to think that many of them don’t have connections high up that will protect them or sufficient money to pay people.

The released files contain the anonymous tips people sent in, including ones sent after Epstein became public knowledge. This tip was likely fake (or at least the fading embers of my faith in humanity hope it is), but we'll never know for sure due to the DOJ's refusal to investigate any of it.

As I heard it, literal newborn infant cannibalism.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 39 points 3 days ago (11 children)

And given how literally everything the right says is projection, it matches up completely with the shit they were accusing Hillary Clinton of

i wouldnt be surprised if beastiality is also involved but not revealed, since beastaility often goes hand in hand with PEDOPHELIA And other deviant behaviour. illicit discussion board on the dark web, or obscure sites have lal these combined, it stands to reason that epstien paraphelia island has it too.

[–] Phantaloons@piefed.zip 9 points 2 days ago

Not a single investigation

Why would the blue republicans investigate the red republicans?

[–] foggianism@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And we see only the tame half of the Epstein files. The other 3 mil have not been released

[–] Janx@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago

Exactly. It's not random, they keep the worst, most damaging parts redacted or unreleased...

[–] Teppichbrand@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The only person in prison is a woman

[–] NostraDavid@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

TBF, the guy who was in prison got murdered.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

the only one that hold the keys to ratting all of them out, but they are keeping her quiet.

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Viewing justice as the punishment of the guilty is conservatism 101.

The real failure is that no legislation, law-enforcement, or court action has been taken to address why billionaires can snatch little girls off the street. The real failure is that rape is barely even illegal in the US, and it's viewed as right and proper when powerful men have access to little girls the same way their wealth provides them with access to all rare and desirable objects.

This isn't because our leaders are sick, it's because our society is. These men didn't steal our daughters, we sold them out, cheap. No amount of Presidents in prison will change that.

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 49 points 3 days ago (9 children)

well let’s try putting a president in prison to test your theory in the meantime.

Is it just "this country"?

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean outside of America people have lost their jobs and their titles and potentially jail time due to appearing in the files. You can argue it's not enough but I will stress outside of America there has been some semblance of accountability.

In America absolutely nothing has happened. Nothing. Speaks volumes of the nation.

The emperor is without his clothes. We all see it.

[–] IratePirate@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

In America absolutely nothing has happened

Not true. Maxwell was transferred to a plush jail until the rapist-in-chief can fully pardon her.

Can someone please enlighten me on the fucking cannibalism?

[–] bss03@infosec.pub 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have not read any of the files yet, but I have been told they include unsubstantiated and un-investigated reports, some of which may be "trolling" and not even attempt to contain any truth.

That said, cannibalism is, IMO, a lesser moral failing than what the victim reported (and continue to support).

So remember how maga thinks that Hillary was farming kids for something apparently called adrenochrome in their blood ?

https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/pseudoscience/qanons-adrenochrome-quackery

Well...it's always projection, every time.
