NYPD used to be super strict about ticketing for "blocking the box". Like it was their favorite thing to do. I know it's usually worse in midtown but I guess they've fallen off.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

There's virtually zero traffic enforcement in NYC

[–] Weydemeyer@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 weeks ago

Ironic given that the NYPD has a larger budget than what most countries spend on their military.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Huh, as a visitor I always had a different opinion about NYC traffic but I’m probably not really seeing it. They had “don’t block the box” for years, it’s not like speeding is even possible most of the time, and there are so many people that you can’t help but deal with them

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 3 points 2 weeks ago

Try parking during the street sweep

[–] olympicyes@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I’ve been in two taxis that have gotten tickets for blocking the box in NYC 10-15 years ago. I guess I was surprised to see this tolerated.

  1. bang bang with your hand gets the message across and is legal.
  2. you didn't even tell 'ey I'm walking here'
[–] Janx@piefed.social 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

Counter-point: They can kill you by applying pressure with their toe. Alternate plan: Make them fear breaking the law in the first place...

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago

You bang bang backwards after passing.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

The all-american solution: point your gun at them

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

Not if you're off to the side

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 49 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I like those videos where people open the back doors of cars stopped on crossings and climb out the other door so they can cross the road.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Absolutely insane. You know how many of our fellow americans have guns and zero chill!? It's not fair, but protest in a manner that's safe...

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 27 points 2 weeks ago

It's safe because the videos are staged

[–] hash@slrpnk.net 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm a relatively risk averse person but this is crazy. Do you fret the same amount every time you head out on our increasingly deadly roads? I can't imagine leaving the house if I believed my fellow citizens were one small inconvenience away from blowing my head off in broad daylight.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's crazy!? Really?? Again, the commenter is advocating you open some stranger's vehicle while they are stopped at a light and enter it. You don't know if they have kids in there, if they think you are carjacking them, etc. And yeah, they might be armed.

And what's this false equivalency about it being the same as driving on the road? That makes no sense and is completely irrelevant. Did you even read the comment I was replying to??

Anyone who's driven on american roads knows how aggressive people can be. And the comment is talking about entering these same people's vehicles unannounced and not thinking they will react badly or panic in the moment!? Also, I think it's technically trespassing in most states...

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I walk on top of the car.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 41 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Seeing this always makes me consider carring a pack of stickers on me that say something embarrassing on it

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 34 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Gallagher used to tell a joke that every driver should be issued a suction cup dart gun, that shoots darts with a red flag on it at any car driving like an idiot. When a cop sees a car with 3 flags on the fender, he pulls them over, and gives them a ticket for being an asshole.

I thought all he did was smash large fruits and veggies.

Just hold one of your keys out as you walk by the cars on the crosswalk.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 4 points 2 weeks ago

Crude but effective

[–] LegoBrickOnFire@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

If you know no fear, climb on the cars blocking the path :p

It's 45th St. That's absolutely NOT what every crossing at 3rd Ave looks like. Stay out of Midtown if you want people who behave like others exist. Midtown is a hellscape

Needs an additional lane so more cars could pass and not block the crosswalk

Tap for spoiler/s

[–] Tuxman@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

Remove the crosswalks!

Problem solved, job finished! Give all of you a pat on the back and let’s go hang out at the strip club!

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Seems like a place that need a crossing brick to me.

[–] Sabin10@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

My dude, hammers are nice but keys are ubiquitous

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

In my country the law states that in crosswalks without traffic lights, pedestrians must be given unobstructed access. I've considered getting steel tipped shoes and just kicking the violators with those. After all, it's basically the same as walking swiftly. I bet the case would be even stronger with a green traffic light...

Leave space for crossing you damn carbrains!

[–] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 9 points 2 weeks ago

That's why you go through the cars. Leave the doors open.

[–] dan69@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I wonder if their mayor can do something about this. I do understand that this is behavior that he cannot impose. But as a leader he could rally them to be “self-accountable” and more importantly vigilant towards pedestrians.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

If they actually enforced pedestrian law, it would be fixed.

[–] FlowerFan@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

In Switzerland, we just bang on the window

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Never seen a car this blatantly ignoring traffic rules here. And if they do, not for long.

[–] AccoSpoot1@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I'm walkin' here!

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 weeks ago

This is why bicyclists carry bike locks
