My relative, who works for one of the biggest oil companies in the world, declares whenever it comes up that solar is a scam. I despise my own family

My dad hates solar and throws literally fits when he see panels on someone's house. Doesn't effect him at all. He lives in Texas so I wouldn't be surprised if he made the complaints.

I remember when people in Texas prided themselves on minding their own goddamn business

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I remember when that was the normal not only Texas but everywhere. When I was kid it was normal to wave at passing cars, and your neighbors. Now everyone hates everyone else.

And can't let people do what they want for themselves or their homes. Hell it doesn't even effect them.

A lot of the people in my neighborhood are actually pretty friendly, in an idealized-small-town sort of way. But I live in one of those "scary" "inner-city" neighborhoods with The Blacks™ and The Gays™ and whatnot, so it's a little different for me.

Meanwhile, my Boomer parents, who live out in the suburbs, complain that their subdivision has gone completely to Hell. Funny, that.

Hood gays are the most ride or die people on earth

Do you? Or do you remember when they falsely claimed to mind their own goddamn business?

It felt genuine to me. The vibe I used to get from Texas was Republican by convenience. Republicans deliver a lot of what Texans wanted, and the weird annoying social conservative stuff was along for the ride. I always felt like most Texans really didn't give a fuck if you were white black blue or purple if you kept to yourself and didn't bother them

You should tell him that oil is basically a chemical battery for biological solar panels.

That energy came from the sun too, just it was a long time ago and a tree probably converted into cellulose that went undigested for millennia until it was geologically transformed into fossil fuels.

Tell him it's fine if he's a hippie and wants to wait around a million years for his yuppie artisanal solar derrivitives, but you're a man and you just want your power NOW

My “scam” has caused my electric bill to effectively drop below zero when averaged over the whole year. And that includes charging our EV, which means the “scam” is saving me a boatload of cash given gas prices these days.

Do you have tips for how to handle a relative who’s engaged with a pretty directly evil company/business practice?

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 5 points 3 days ago

See if you can invest? Evil is doing very well these days.

This is not complaining about solar, this is complaining about companies promising something and failing to deliver.
