My employer is perpetually understaffed; and so are most of the places my friends work. Is it really cheaper to burn everyone out at 88hr weeks paying 1.5x, than hire the proper staff? What would it take to get a push for 2x overtime pay started to stop these shenanigans?

Yeah this is worker abuse, you should report it with the authorities. AFAIK, each ptovence has its own organization for that

I'm gonna assume OP is rounding up a bit but if the 88 hours / week is actually accurate than the employer is likely violating the rest period laws.

In BC you need to be given time off for 32 hours uninterrupted every week, additionally you must be given 8 hours off every day.

If I do that, my career is over, no one would even give me an interview again. 7 years of school down the drain.

FYI you have a legal right to refuse Overtime.

If they retaliate and fire you for that you'll have excellent grounds to sue them for wrongful dismissal etc.

Yeah, they will absolutely retaliate. The last guy who tried to organize everyone had an "Accident" and can't work anymore. Guy before that got written up on SA charges and fired. There is a vast gap between what you know and what you can prove.
