George Lucas naming his mary sue protagonist 'Luke'...

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 47 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How have I never noticed this?

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 35 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think Luke is a Mary Sue, at least not to the same degree Rey is, or even Fynn. Luke takes an entire movie and a half to learn some basic stuff and then rushes in to a trap and loses a hand as a result. The only reason he survives that encounter is because Vader doesn't want to kill him.

Rey and Fynn both know how to use a lightsaber the second they touch it and manage to wound a guy with years of training without receiving a scratch themselves. Rey literally never makes a mistake.

True. Although the part that I really feel like I should have noticed earlier is Lucas > Luke.

[–] topherclay@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Usually the epiphany includes the second syllable as: Lucas > Luke S.

Y'all have to stop blowing my mind.

The moment when Han is thinking, "Wait, didn't she kiss him? Like, on the lips??"

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 4 points 2 weeks ago

Right before he gets a big goofy grin on his face.

I see you Han. I know what you're into.

Son of a bi...

While I anticipated some level of self-insert, I'm shocked at how blindsided I am at this

[–] sangeteria@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 weeks ago

"Son of a bi" is gonna be how a strong minority contingent of male children will refer to themselves in the next 20 or so years

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Ok that one got me.

J.G Ballard naming his main character who finds car crashes hot Ballard.

[–] Yaenntz@fedia.io 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nice! A Ballard mention out in the wild. His stories could really creep into my mind.

I have eyes only for Lizzie.

[–] Uebercomplicated@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you! Lizzie is far more interesting and witty as a character

Nabokov naming literally everyone after himself 😬

[–] EarlOfSam@quokk.au 4 points 2 weeks ago

To everyone's dismay...

[–] black_flag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

[–] aGlassDarkly@piefed.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago
