Five guy style twice fried French fries. Hamburger bun grilled cheese with processed cheese food slices, hot dogs from the air fryer. Fry sauce made from mayonnaise, ketchup and malt vinegar.

Ask your doctor if American food is right for you.

Cost per person: $2.40.

review by an American: the aesthetic is right, but all the details are wrong. would definitely eat it, would never have thought to make it. fascinating to be on the other side of how other cultures must feel about our attempts at their cuisine

I'm sure someone somewhere has made that exact sandwich before, but not on purpose. that's the kind of thing you make because you're stoned or broke and it's all you've got right now

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago

I identify as broke. I look forward to getting my gas service turned back on.

American here, @FauxPseudo@lemmy.world. Don't listen to this.

That shit looks great. Looks like a sourdough bun from Jack in the Box. I don't eat a lot of food like this, maybe once or twice a year, but that there looks killer. Good job!

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Another American here, sure it looks great, but that wasn't the point of the comment. It's that it's not quite American food. I love malt vinegar as much as the next Anglophile but we don't really use it here except for fish sometimes, and sure I'd fuck up a hot dog sandwich but I've never heard of one outside of a struggle meal.

It's cool. I'm broke so I fit their criteria.

[–] mephiska@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Looks like a regular hamburger bun but toasted and used inside out so more like a grilled cheese outside. Kinda brilliant tbh

[–] Lirton@lemmy.today 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Looks totally edible. I suppose that tastes it also good.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It was kinda magical. After a week of stir fried veggies it hit the spot.

[–] mystrawberrymind@piefed.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

Sometimes you have to allow yourself a cheat day😋

This is an elevated version of the 'clear out the last few things from the fridge to make it to payday" meals I remember from my childhood. Needs to be plated on a TV tray in a cigarette smelling room to complete the meal.

Adding air fryer hot dogs to my list.

Sounds better than boiled hot dogs.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It turns the absolutely cheapest hotdog into crispy skinned tasties. It is now my default method of all tube meats.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I should stock up on tube meats.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't forget the kielbasa.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Twin was on the same wave length so we have some kielbasa for tomorrow!!

[–] turkalino@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Boiling is the worst way to prepare hot dogs. Even a microwave can produce better results. Boiling causes juices to leach out and the texture is no better than when it was taken out of the package.

Notice how boiling is not listed on this page: https://nathansfranks.sfdbrands.com/en-us/articles/hot-dog-blog/how-to-cook-the-perfect-hot-dog/

[–] jaycifer@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

the texture is no better than when it was taken out of the package.

It's tough to improve on perfection!

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

In my other comment I said how I love them boiled but this reminds me - when I was around 5 years old I used to sneak to the fridge and eat raw hotdogs. So maybe that's why I love them boiled today?

I hate microwaved hotdogs

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

You can cook them in a regular oven or fry them in a pan. Anything is better than boiled.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I used to drive to the local Home Depot just to get the hotdogs they sold out front, then I learned they were so good because they were boiled and I just started doing it at home.

Anyway, my point is, boiled hot dogs are the best hot dogs!

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

When I was in college my room mate boiled hot dogs in my electric tea kettle and I still haven’t forgiven her. It was in 2004.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you. Have you reached out to them to see if they want to apologize?

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It wouldn’t take away the memory of hot dog flavored tea, so what’s the point.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Lol that is nasty! I once got the flu after eating 2-3 hotdogs (I was a teenager) and puked them up. The taste of them coming up stopped me eating them for about 5 years. I imagine hotdog flavored tea wouldn't taste much better

[–] MakingWork@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I have bad news for you- the concensus in this comment section says boiling is the worst.

But that's ok- I'll continue to boil because I don't know any better.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The comments are WRONG, maaan

Clearly not an American if you can afford healthcare

Looks/sounds tasty!

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I am my own unlicensed doctor.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

They're not grilled cheese if there's a hot dog in it.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Man that just made me think of a tuna melt and I just went food shopping... Time to go back... Lol

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

We always have large can of tuna on hand in case the urge hits us.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

If you make a banana split, sit it on the counter, take a picture, say, "yep, that's a banana split". Then for whatever deranged reason you lay a fried hot dog on top, that's a banana split with hot dog.

This is a grilled cheese with hot dog.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

As a North Carolinian, and that's as far as I go for the sake of anonymity,... this is mid-tier, as a southerner.

Two upside-down hamburger-buns, two fried hotdogs, two slices of cheese and fries, the "default" of sides. This entire "meal" is roughly $5 of food for $2 of sustenance and I think you deserve better for yourself.

American food? This is on the sloppier side of "American Food", there's more bread and starch on the plate than turnip greens, BBQ or at least some fried chicken, god forbid some stewed carrots or sweet potatoes or something.

ALL THAT ASIDE

Homie toasted the buns upside down for extra crispness, and I bet being soft on the inside makes the chew interesting, and the fries aren't exactly a low quality. The execution is top-tier, but I mean, come on.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

This isn't meant to represent any particular American dish. It's just a vibe of things American. I can't think of another country that could even offer something like this.

Literally $2.40 of food.

I'm in Lesser Carolina. Just 40 minutes south of Charlotte. Maybe you would prefer Carolina Bird Dogs?

As an American I have never in my life seen anything like this.

It looks disgusting.

Who the heck puts hot dogs for the hamburger patty tho

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

People that have buns to use, hotdogs in the freezer and zero money.

I imagine quite salty, but delicious.

[–] A_Drusas@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

And fatty, making it extra delicious.

Replace that hot dog with some breakfast sausage and you have a slice of heaven right there.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Minimal salt on the fries.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

This gave me heartburn looking at it. Lol

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I had to look up "twice fried French fries". Sounds great but do you have a way to do it without getting oil splatter everywhere? It's the reason I stopped frying my fries and baking them just isn't the same

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Use a deep pot. Fill it no more than 1/3 with oil. It makes maintaining 350f harder but it minimizes cleanup and fire risk.
