  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

for roughly the same reason i wouldn't fight a komodo dragon

TIL komodo dragons have an atomic heat beam attack

[–] sober_monk@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Once the shooting was done, I hope everyone involved in building it had a chance to stomp around the set, slamming into buildings and making kaiju noises. I know I wouldn't be able to resist.

Godzilla doesn't make any sense in New York. It's always been a metaphor for the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and it feels wrong for that to be appropriated into a city of the country that created that devastation

[–] isyasad@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It’s always been a metaphor for the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

I know that this is a really common take about Godzilla, but it's pretty clearly not what the 1954 original Godzilla movie was about. The aesthetics of Godzilla's destruction is informed/inspired by nuclear destruction. Not just of Hiroshima or Nagasaki but particularly of Bikini Atoll nuclear testing. The opening scene in the movie would have reminded people of the Daigo Fukuryuu Maru, a fishing boat that was hit by some of the testing just earlier that year.

But while the aesthetic of Godzilla's destruction is nuclear, its place in the story is really different. The story is about scientists who develop a brand new devastating weapon that could destroy the mindless rampaging monster, but they have to decide whether or not it is worth introducing such a weapon that would permanently change the world.
The "oxygen destroyer" that they invent in the movie is a much more direct parallel to the atomic bomb, and Godzilla is the Japanese Empire. We must defeat [the Japanese Empire / Godzilla], but is it worth unleashing [the atomic bomb / the oxygen destroyer] onto the world?
The 1954 Godzilla movie is very clearly an attempt to empathize with the American perspective on using the first atomic weapons.

Godzilla is the bomb, but it's also the Japanese Empire. It's a symbol of violence and shared scars between the United States and Japan. USA and Japan are the only two countries to have made Godzilla movies (as far as I know) and I think it would be inappropriate for any other country to make one, but I don't think it's necessarily inappropriate to set one in New York. Though, it's probably less meaningful than the 1954 movie (to be fair, most Godzilla movies after the 1954 one are less meaningful).

The 1954 movie is so dense with meaning. It's a true masterpiece of film making. Sometimes I say that and people act like I haven't see "good" movies or I'm just reaching too hard on a dumb monster movie. But Godzilla is a movie we still talk about 72 years later. It's one that we still judge other installments in the media franchise by. Godzilla Minus One is probably the only installment that's worth considering as being on the same level as the original. It speaks to me more closely, but I also think there's something lost from the original. The new puts more focus on ecological devastation, while the old one has more to say about humanity. My outlook on the world is that the original has everything to say about ecological devastation that the old one did, it's just that it's not as centered. I end up liking the new one more because it maps more directly to my lived reality, however, if someone has to ONLY watch one, I think they should watch 1954's movie. All of the 69 years of film making advancements on display don't change the fact that Godzilla 1954 had a message to deliver and that it was going to deliver it even if all of the technology we have today didn't exist yet.

Don't come into my notifications with an entire novel about your personal take on Godzilla like some contrarian Redditor. Do simple research.

[–] isyasad@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

What upset you? Just the length of my comment? You don't have to read it.

You commenting about the themes of Godzilla and then me responding about the themes of Godzilla is the whole point of a discussion board.
What do you mean by "do simple research"?

Not even as a form of karma?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

On the contrary, I would fight side-by-side with a Komodo Dragon to destroy New York. Well, not all of New York, just part of it. One building in particular.

A komodo dragon would kill me no problem

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I feel like you and the meme are over estimating komodo dragons. It would probably maim you and infections could definitely kill you after but I feel like most adult humans, if in a life or death struggle, would come out on top.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (8 children)

Dude, they're 300 pounds of pure lizard muscle, venomous, razor teeth, and have very powerful limbs with sharp claws... They sprint at 12mph and take down wild pigs in literal seconds on the regular. There's no way. Like absolutely no. In a life or death struggle, most adult humans would end up disemboweled or missing a limb and then swallowed whole while still alive, like they do to boars and water buffalo.

It is a myth that they kill by biting and waiting for infection.

A human with a pointy stick is a force to be reckoned with. Maybe if you didn't see it coming?

It'd definitely hurt you, especially if it bit you, the resulting infection would be deadly. But I feel like that's the only way a single komodo could kill you. Multiple ones or with the element of surprise would have a much higher chance of course.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

They're 10 feet long, 300 pounds of pure muscle, sprint at 12mph, and tear apart wild pigs in seconds. It is a myth that they kill by biting and waiting for infection. They use their razor teeth and powerful clawed limbs to slice open prey, then swallow them whole. There'd be no contest.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

After sleeping on it, you're probably right. However for context a human is roughly 200lbs of muscle and can sprint 20mph. We lack effective claws but we can strategize and use tools.

What kind of prep do you think a human would need to take on a single komodo? I feel like a spear would be OP but even with a smallish blade and very light body armor I think you'd stand a good chance.

If there are multiple lizards or it surprises you is going to matter a lot. As well as the area you're in, can you escape? This isn't a gorilla or even a bear that can just run you down. It's a roughly human sized lizard, which is definitely not something I want to fight but is also something that humans trap and kill.

If we're allowed to use simple weapons/tools or escape I'm confident a human can win. However if we're unarmed, or trapped in a place with it, we're fucked.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

When people say "I could take that in a fight", I don't interpret it as "I'm capable of running away from that". Yeah, komodo dragon aren't just slaughtering humans all the time, because we are way more capable of avoiding and outsmarting them in general.

A long spear changes the game. Allegedly komodo dragon skulls are not very strong, so a polehammer in practiced hands would probably be most ideal.

I imagine that once trapped, they are fed to make them safer to interact with. Does a dead pig or goat count as a simple tool?

this gives noncredibledefense vibes hehe absolutely love it

Bring back the miniatures in blockbuster movies goddamit

[–] ashenone@lemmy.ml 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'd fight a komodo dragon, not because I belive I would win, but because it's a dope way to go

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Important question: can we use weapons?

I assume that in a no-holds-barred fight for our/other peoples' lives, weapons would be allowed.

In this case, yes, I absolutely would fight the komodo dragon. I may not have brawn, but I regularly MacGyver crafts from almost literally anything I come across (it's practically a compulsion. You know how when you put on a bandaid, you peel off a bit of paper that covers the sticky ends? I mindlessly made a cootie catcher out of one of those the other day.) Everything could potentially be a million things! I figure that creativity could help me find something to help in such a fight. I'd just have to be careful not to get too sidetracked.

Oh?

Why yes, I do have ADHD! How did you guess?

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Same with Godzilla. Can this guy use weapons? It's only fair - Godzilla has nuclear breath as a weapon! Homeboy needs to make some telephone pole nunchuks and go to town. Or go all Pacific Rim and use a ship as a whackin' stick. Can the Military roll up a tank and he use it like a gun with a guy inside of it?

10/10, would also fight Godzilla, and I would watch the fuck out of this movie.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Grenades only.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How does the stupid thing even fight? If it bites me, it dies of bacterial infection iirc.

[–] icanbrewmushrooms@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, you've remembered that wrong. It is immune to the bacteria that live on its teeth, if it bites you then you get a bacterial infection that leaves you paralysed, then you get very slowly eaten alive by a komodo dragon.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

While that sounds very very hot, afraid it would be the one dying, after bitting me. As I have more than enough toxins in my own body.

Finally answering the eternal question,

"Is Paul Bunyan a kaiju?"

[–] Draconic_NEO@pawb.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the answer is most certainly yes.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

His bull Blue certainly was.

Yes. She's basically Krang.

This must be from before Mamdani was mayor, because now there's a bunch of things that can be pointed at to answer the question "what has New York ever done for me."

[–] FlowerFan@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

New York has absolutely never done anything for me

I am from Europe

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I can think of a couple of very, very famous exceptions. World wide even.

After that I suppose it depends on your feelings on the .ml instance in general
