I ate lots of basil but never found any wooden parts. Did they feed me fake basil or what?

I had a basil plant I neglected like hell and barely managed to keep alive for ~2 years. By the end of its life after several rounds of barely surviving me forgetting to water it for a week or two, its stems had become woody. I don't know if all mature basil stems harden or if that was a consequence of my plant abuse

I see, so we usually eat up the plant before it can even get to the stage of developing wood, now it makes sense.

seems the stems become woody after it flowers, it make sense since many plants do this. like artichoke,
