Change comes from people with enough time and energy to try new things.

The Wright Brothers could play around with their crazy ideas. Da Vinci made enough from his paintings to explore all sorts of things.

Back in Ben Franklin's time, the 'natural philosophers' were well-to-do fellows messing around for the joy of it.

The best change comes from places of comfort. Queer subcultures that explode into societal change, deep conversations that change your outlook on life, even the comfort of being at rock bottom and choosing what your way up will be.

Stress causes people to hold on to what they know. "Better the devil you know". The notion that suffering brings growth is Calvinist (and other authoritarians') hogwash meant to get people to cooperate in their own exploitation.

Yeah, the idea that suffering brings growth is why conservatives don't like welfare programs. My childhood church said that you have to know real hunger before you can truly believe in god and start seeing changes in your life, so lets get rid of lunches for schoolkids.

I think there's a difference between personal change and growth and cultural change and growth

I'm trying to undergo some really important change and growth for my wellbeing and its REALLY uncomfortable.

That being said queer culture isnt entirely shaped by comfort, lots of the change in queer culture is shaped by the problems queer people experience in the world and want to do something about. And its comfort and community that provide the space in which that change can manifest. But it is still, in a way, brought on by the discomfort.

I'm not saying thats what the meme is about though. Its about challenging yourself to step outside of what feels easy and comfortable when thats not serving you. I guess in some people's cases queer people choosing to step into that place and allow themselves to identify with a new culture and new group of people may often fit that pattern though. It may not be entirely comfortable for them to navigate this newly realized aspect of themselves and deal with its consequences, but it may bring new positive things when they do :)

If someone is truly comfortable, they will play. Children play, and learn and change at an incredbily rapid pace because of it. An uncomfortable child will suffer later in life for the lack of change/development they were able to do because they were uncomfortable.

Most of the time, most adults are teeming with discomfort. They may be capable of finding a daily routine that can be mistaken for comfort by virtue of being less uncomfortable than the changes they have easy access to, but that doesn't erase everything they have to deal with.

To change they need comfortable headroom, so they can at the very least suffer the extra discomfort of going through change with an insufficient safety net without breaking. The more comfort, the more secure the safety net, the more change there can be.
