Second article on the deal: https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/trump-greenland-deals-reportedly-includes-u-s-sovereignty-over-small-pockets-of-territory/

NATO released a statement on Wednesday shortly after President Donald Trump announced he and NATO Secretary Secretary General Mark Rutte had “formed’ a “framework” of a deal on Greenland. The NATO statement came amid new reporting from the New York Times that deal may include the U.S. being given “sovereignty over small pockets” of land in Greenland.

"Sovereignty over small pockets"... so, like, military bases that we already have?

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 75 points 5 months ago

BINGO! LoL, time for cheeto tacos.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 20 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

More like Thiels "freedom citys" probably. Or that's at least what he thinks he is walking away with.

[–] apftwb@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Or like how the Sudetenlands were small pockets of the former Czechoslovakia.

[–] Seaguy05@lemmy.world 125 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Sounds like they're pulling a known working trick... Offer stuff that was already available.

[–] criscodisco@lemmy.world 90 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Cue Trump, 2027 from in his hospice bed:

“This was the worst deal, very stupid people made this deal. I call it the Biden Greenland Deal. Everyone’s saying it. It’s unbelievable.”

cough cough pooping noises

I’m naturally a pessimist. That way, I’m never disappointed.

(I’m always disappointed).

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Bruh pessimism at this point looks like: god king trump on his death bed in the gold house, circa 2033 (formerly White House): then what you said.

[–] stormdelay@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

That's sheer optimism, pessimism would be more like: "god emperor trump on his golden throne, kept immortal by the sacrifice of thousands of people every day"

His immortal head in a jar, needs regular cleaning because it still manages to shit itself.

[–] Sevensolus@lemmy.world 21 points 5 months ago (4 children)

Well, yes and no. I fear this step opens the doors for furure claims on more land there. Not saying it will be Trump, but eventually someone might start claiming more land there, because "they maintain it", "they have military there" and "they already own parts" of the island anyway. Europe is letting US gain a foothold in Greenland. And once they get a piece, they will never let go. It's always the case for imperialism and neofascism - especially the type that is on the rise in the US

Oh thank f--k. I don't think I could have handled there being a war with the US over Greenland.

Now all I have to worry about is the Online "Safety" Act and the rise of authoritarianism and the far right in my country!

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 99 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yeah. He did the same thing with NAFTA. Then 5 years later he was all like, "What kind of idiot made this fuckin' deal?"

You can't negotiate with stupid.

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

This time he’ll be 6ft under in 5 years

Don't kid yourself. That son of a bitch will live well past 100.

He also wasn't known for eating unhealthily and getting next to no sleep. He also didn't have a 4 year gap between terms where he seethed 24/7. He also wasn't President (a very stressful job) at such an advanced age.

Yeah I get it, trump could live 20 more years, but if we look at what's likely for someone in such conditions, he probably shouldn't make it 10. But who knows. We can hope, and that hope isn't baseless.

[–] eRac@lemmings.world 34 points 5 months ago (1 children)

"Forever. be forever" Trump said about the deal. "That's better than the Obama deal with the famous Iran nuclear deal, with a nine-year deal. No, this is forever. This is long-term."

What an asshole. Blows up a significant measure in limiting the spread of nukes, then acts like it fell apart on its own.

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 14 points 5 months ago

That's the republican way.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

“We have the concept of a deal.”

I can’t believe he actually said it. I was going to post that phrase exactly just to make fun of his “concept of a plan” statement. This man is such a pathetic joke.

[–] whitecollarcry@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

which is why cucks in trucks identify with the piece of shit

Dane here. Here is what has actually happened for those wondering:

Our prime minister and representative had a great meeting with Rutte just before, and also after. Our Danish foreign minister and Greenlandic representative are now ready to talk with the US administration behind closed doors, now that the circus is over.

I think they'd prefer to keep it out of the media, but I think the massive absurdity around this has ended up with their administration showing all their cards, and our officials holding all theirs. Whatever it is they want on paper still can't be accomplished as far as I can tell, but now they are appearently ready to talk like adults.

It's very odd, and according to NATO officials, they pretty much just talked about continuing things as usual in the arctic. Because we all know that there is absolutely no threat there. But it is likely to have something to do with Theils and other billionaires investment in mineral search, and perhaps being able to extract Germanium and Gallium from the underground sometime in the future. Because as of now it is not cost-effective, but China holds like 80% of the market.

So yeah, whatever it is they will give to us and Greenland for this, they will have to figure out over a cup of coffee, because now adults can talk. Let's see how long it lasts though before the real idiots in power over there decide to whisper something in the clowns ear, so we can have another reality show performance.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Thanks for that summary.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 25 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It's a great thing, great thing, very odd, some people, a couple of people, eating with spoons, or eating the spoons, I don't know, could be forks, maybe, could be either, eating, but a lot of people say it, spoons, could be forks, knives, sometimes, very sharp, very sharp knives sometimes, eating soup with a fork, you can't do that, you can't, I tell them, where would we put our shoes, they don't listen, we have the best shoes, such great shoes, so then they say we should pay for the shoes, horrible people, nasty people, what does that mean, fork, it's a new word they invented, fork! We call it a spoon, shoes, man, burger, what is that. I don't know.

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Sir. They said. Sir. You can't negotiate a deal with Greenland, Sir. That's what they said. I said Joe Biden couldn't do it. Crooked Hillary couldn't do it. I said it's in my genes. Very smart. My nuclear uncle did the MIT. Very smart. So I put the magnet in the water and it didn't work anymore. They said, sir, no one has ever thought of that. But the crooked fake news won't tell you anything about that. A lot of people are saying it.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 5 months ago

My 83-year old demented father had more coherent ramblings than this clown.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

The most cognitively correct thing trump has said. Especially since he didn't say it

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

He sounds like he’s getting reality mixed up with dreams he had the night before.

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

And probably the other way around too.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I hope that isn't actually the case because it would be egregious even for Rutte, a world champion in slobbering his orange Daddy's knob.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 37 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It's not. Trump is massively overstating the deal. They're basically just giving him stuff he already has. And they're doing it in a way that forces the US to do more work on Arctic defence. It's kind of genius actually.

[–] redditmademedoit@piefed.zip 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's probably right that Trump is overstating his win, but frankly any form of yielding to Trump is infuriating. If there is a deal that covers "the entire Arctic region" the details will be important. Countries in that region include Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. One should not assume it's a win for the Nato countries with more Trump regime forces in the region after the US has threatened invasion or annexation of two of them.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 months ago

The thing is, the US already has agreements that would allow them to stage a military presence in Greenland almost double the entire country's permanent population. So no, this isn't allowing them any kind of expanded presence. They already had that option any time they wanted to exercise it. But Trump, despite all his bullshit claims, had no actual interest in a US military presence in the Arctic region.

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

So Trump got "Rutted"?

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

I think what Trump likes to do is bluster and bloviate and threaten things in order to get a “deal” without ever actually intending to do anything.

But then sometimes the opposing side fights back and he puts his tail between his legs and moves on to the next target.

I’m guessing NATO said some things that made him retreat. Like we won’t buy anything American anymore and your MIC collapses and we will sell of a load of bonds etc. Carney did this last year, just hovers on the button and see the orange turds reaction.

[–] reddit_sux@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

I wonder how many if any of these deals made under duress will be undone by the democratic administration if they win it. If history is of any indication none will be the answer.

[–] SarahValentine@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 5 months ago

Interesting! I wonder what history has to say about appeasing tyrants, and how it worked out in the past.

Isn't Rutte the worm that keeps brownnosing him? Does he even have the authority to unilaterally give away "pockets" of another country?

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 2 points 5 months ago

He doesn't. What he does have the authority to do, is sell Trump a 75-ish year old deal made by Truman.

Literally all this does is shut the toddler up, and invite him to sit at the kids table while the adults talk.
