ATSC 3.0 allows broadcasters to track consumer viewing habits much like Facebook and Google use today.

Sure wouldn't want to miss out on that.

I lost all interest in it when stations started putting DRM in their over the air channels. It would have been a great upgrade if the FCC would have banned DRM and encryption.

Seems to me like Pirate Television should be really easy these days….

Honestly, operating a private streaming site is much safer than pirate VHF/ UHF broadcasts, both in terms of what you'll get charged with, and how long you'll remain undetected. VHF and UHF broadcasts are literal homing beacons (and without something to bounce the signal off, very limited in what you'd reach).

No they're not. All but one major network DRM'd the whole works in my area. They want to turn OTA TV into Cable/Streaming. FCC should force them to give up the public airwaves leased to them for doing that. Make them broadcast over the internet like every other DRM'd pay service.

Converter box? I literally checked the date on the article, I figured OP was confused.

Why would I pay money for something I don't use anyway? Lol.

I feel they've vastly overestimated the market here.

E: guess I gave up on the article too soon. DRM? What clowns. I'll stick to self hosting, thanks very much.

If they don't drop the DRM, they are not going to win anybody over

I'm sure the ATSC 3.0 private keys will be dumped sooner or later. These silly games didn't protect DVD, HD-DVD, or BluRay.
