That's a sweet ass-telescope

obligatory XKCD

Knowing how astronomers typically name these things that could legitimately be the actual name for this telescope.

I came here to voice this exact thought and now I don't know whether that makes me unoriginal or if it just means that astronomers are crazy.

Big ass-telescopes can only see Uranus.

My partner had to get a tiny one just to locate the details

[–] lefty7283@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Lmao that scope is backwards

Yeah, that’s not very typical. I’d like to make that point.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Same. I'm glad I'm not alone.

Shout out to Kitt Peak! This place is semi open to the public and has a nice picnic area.

I'm not sure if they still do it or not but they had a tie that would let you look through a 36" telescope. After the tie you had to drive down the mountain with out any headlights.

Lol, look what a tiny-ass mirror even big-ass solar telescopes need:

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Although it is designed for observation of the Sun, it can also be used to view bright objects at night.

I knew it, the sun is not real!

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

The sun was invented by big sunscreen in the 20's.

The fact that so many plants have adapted to thrive on it in only 100 years, is nothing short of amazing.

The moon is just the back of the sun

Yes, it's all explained in the religious hymn "Black Hole Sun."

At the bottom

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Had no idea it was shaped like that. Why is it shaped like that?! I'm guessing the whole building doesn't rotate.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 1 year ago

So it's a B.A.T. signal detector? 🤪🦇

[–] TimboSlice@discuss.online 2 points 1 year ago

This thing goes way underground and you can look down there...it is super creepy

[–] ABetterTomorrow@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Super cool!
