Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Where’s the other one? I thought they always did missionary stuff in pairs. Unless this is a Jehovah’s Witness she personally knows, I guess; the text made it sound like she snagged one off the street.

Edit: wait, I might be thinking of Mormons. Do JWs also do pairs?

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 71 points 4 months ago (1 children)

JW are also sent out in pairs. Much like the Mormons, it's a way to make sure that they can spy on each other because if your partner falters or strays away, it's also your fault.

Sorry, I mean because of Luke 10:1.

There's also the human response of feeling safer talking to strangers when you're with a friend. It's legit scary talking to someone you don't know and likely about a topic they have already formed strong opinions about.

Shouldn't they come in threes to provide me my safety friend supporting my every argument when I answer the door alone?

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago

well see, threes a crowd. would you open your door for a crowd of people?

Well, of course. How else would you do it, with a pillow?

If you’re by yourself you’re just yanking you’re just yanking your own chain.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 months ago

How do you know if you are doing missionary with a pillow?

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I have had solo missionaries show up before. Not sure which denomination. We never get that far.

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 36 points 4 months ago

Too busy making out 😔

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 13 points 4 months ago

The JWs I’ve had show up at my house have been an entire family of 5, all dressed up in suits.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 7 points 4 months ago

Mormons are the duos, JWs bring as many people from the Kingdom Hall as they can, normally a family or two together, maybe some assorted old people.

[–] ollie@pawb.social 6 points 4 months ago

i think JWs are commonly in pairs but yes mormons are always duos or trios unless theyre service missionaries, but theyre not the ones that knock on your door
