Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

It's a bacteriophage, a proposed replacement for antibiotics. It cannot hurt you, it is meant to save your life in the future.

Lmao.

And you think the country responsible for untold death and destruction, that's lead by war criminal pedophile rapists, isn't working on super viruses secretly as well?

[–] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I didn't say that. I said THIS research is specifically good because it is set to replace antibiotics, which have a well-known expiration date. I can celebrate medical advances without condoning governments that may use the discoveries for evil. Are you of the position that any technology with the capacity to harm should be banned? Or, what is the alternative research method you're proposing?

My proposal is sanctioning America out of existence, forced disarmament, and balkanization. You cannot be trusted, as history shows again and again.

You? Do you think I'm an American?

Fair.

Would this identical research be acceptable then, had it come from a different nation?

[–] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Does the different nation have a long and well documented history of deploying chemical and biological weapons on the battlefield, in civilian areas, and even on their own population? If yes then it would also be unacceptable.

Either I'm not asking the question correctly, or you've misunderstood me. Do you take issue with the research itself, or is this purely distrust of a nation? Is it possible for a nation to exist, from which you would applaud this research, rather than condemn it?

[–] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah it'd be fine if it came out of a place without a history of using biological and chemical weapons all willy nilly.

But coming from America it means they're also using AI to make better biological and chemical weapons.

Well, then it's a good thing it was posted as a research paper so that ever nation and university on the planet can benefit from the most recent progress in combating the problem of antibiotic resistance. I fully concede and accept that you are 100% correct that the US is fucking AWFUL. But regardless of what that cesspool of a nation is plotting, THIS research is positive, and will allow researchers across the planet to better prepare us against future diseases.
