OTOH, a paid off house is all you need for basic subsistence. If you only have to pay property taxes, insurance, and maintenance, getting a couple of roommates would cover that plus something left over for food and other essentials each month. Not a glamorous existence, but it will keep you off the street.

Remember, every home is a potential revenue stream for its owner.
