If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged, but keep it in good faith and never punch down.

Butterflys are carnivorous? That's the second new thing I've learned this morning

[–] Janx@piefed.social 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's probably just opportunistic nutrition, or whatever the term is called when a deer eats a bird...

It's too late. The image is seared into my brain. They are carnivorous monsters

There's a butterfly pavilion near me that I want to take you to. Definitely not to watch you freak out...

[–] TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well ok, if you say it's safe

[–] Janx@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's okay, you'll be wearing a beekeeper suit.

But I don't want to see any bees...

Unless they're the knees

This led me to Sweat bees and a photo of a bee licking sweat. I am again amazed by Wikipedia.

I knew I was scared of those fuckers for a reason

[–] morto@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Depends on the species. Some will stick to flowers, but some will eat even blood or shit

When people in Sweden settled an area with a hill it could be called a “Something-bjer”. Bjer means hill and is close to the modern word Berg.

That is an interesting fact, thank you!
