Why the fuck does NATO need the US? Aren't there enough powerful countries in NATO without them? Maybe it's time to move away from over-reliance on the US on defence like everything else.

No, NATO is thoroughly dependent on the US, it's essentially a means for US imperial power projection. The EU is thoroughly defanged.
