this is less about the actual fighting and more about the now martyred khameini:
"We must look to bring the ideas and system of Islam out of the realm of pure mental abstraction—like all schools of social thought—by looking at practical responsibilities, especially in the realm of social affairs, and reorienting theoretical discussions to see what their implications are for human life, what their goals are, and what methods they prescribe for meeting these goals.”
taken from a book of young Khamenei's speeches during Ramadan, 1974, called Islamic Beliefs: Reclaiming The Narrative. i'm an atheist but this is REAL liberation theology shit. recalls uncle ho's quote about revolutionary morality.
I think one of the biggest lessons of 20th century socialism is that religion isn’t something to indiscriminately fear. It has a unique ability to unite people under shared beliefs which can be harmful. However, that can also be a tremendously powerful tool in building revolutionary movements.
it's a very valuable centripetal force for some revolutionary movements, and it has been invaluable for palestine and iran in their resistance
I hope to not only see this realized more but I hope more leftists also realize even if material condition were met, people will seek out spirituality. Like humans are complex and multifaceted creatures, its reductive to think that mankind are only just material objects who reason along material lines. If the "strategy" is to simply attack a means in which people produce social cohesion then the movement is bound for failure. Movements die when they lose contact with the masses.
Look at modern political outlooks, it is predominately despair over meaning and purpose, you can tie economics into it, but it fails when it is seen as "economics can give you the purpose you desire" because it doesnt. We have social systems that exist outside markets (still tied to and influence it and are influenced by it) that do the heavy lifting of applying parameters to how we collectively act and understand things.
