Latest season is out on Apple. Looks like one or two creatures from down under feature. I don't have a sub to apple, but we found another way to get our fix. Thanks to whoever got us hooked on this series, Zag or Zero or another one of you legends.

From NFSA Player:

The family of the great Yolngu leader Dhakiyarr Wirrpanda is searching for answers. Seventy years after his controversial murder trial and subsequent disappearance, Dhakiyarr’s body has still not been found. His descendants want to restore what was denied to him: his honour. This is their story, told in their own words – a story of two laws, two cultures and two families coming to terms with the past.

I remember watching this when it came out but I need to check it out again. I was too young to appreciate some of the jokes in it and now living in Melbourne I can recognise some of the locations

Not great to watch while eating dinner, but important to see at another time.

I now understand why newsrooms have that idea of what, and what not to put in the news around dinner time.

I started watching/listening to The Movie Show episodes while working (fuck your awful minute-or-more long ad breaks SBS) and there was a glowing review for Cosi. I haven't seen it since release and my partner hasn't seen it so I put it on last night for something a bit light-hearted. It's great, a bit dated, not something you could say is 'timeless' but still a fun watch.

One thing to note is when you see the beach scenes where the young couple live you'll notice how much Sydney has changed in the past 30 years.

From Wikipedia:

Cosi is a 1996 Australian comedy drama film directed by Mark Joffe. Louis Nowra wrote both the screenplay and the 1992 play on which it was based. The story is loosely based on Nowra's own experience at producing Trial by Jury at Plenty Mental Hospital in suburban Melbourne in 1971.

Last week Australia lost a titan of the film and television game; acclaimed journalist, author, interviewer, educator, television personality and producer David Stratton. So, for this week’s Vault Guest Programmer episode, we’re replaying a very special episode featuring David and his At The Movies co-host Margaret Pomeranz.

Join us this Friday night for this once-off auteur special as David and Margaret walk us through the who’s who of incredible music video (and film!) directors. Featured names include David Lynch, Wong Kar-wai, Richard Lowenstein and much more, plus there's some hilarious stories from David and Margaret themselves.

Catch the action this Friday night on ABC Entertains from 11:40pm!

NOTE: 'ABC Entertains' is apparently the latest rebranding of ABC3/'ABC ME'.

Translated from Wikipedia using Firefox's inbuilt translation tool:

The metropolitan couple Stine and Teit and their little son Nemo leave the hamster wheel and move off-the-grid in the Swedish countryside. Cut off from civilization, they hope to rediscover the love of nature and each other, all the while documenting their new sustainable lifestyle in a podcast series.

One day, Nemo gets away in the forest, and their newfound paradise transforms with one time into a prison; repressed anger and own needs come to life, forcing them to confront their own egos.

Fire time I've heard the phrase 'leave the hamster wheel'.

Film was cool, kinda spooky, kinda thrilling, sometimes funny, sometimes obnoxious even.

From a review in Variety:

Three generations of a village tofu-making dynasty gather for different rituals throughout the changing seasons in Oh Jung-min's funny, sad, humane portrait of domestic triumph and tragedy.

From Wikipedia:

The Days is a Japanese biographical drama series on Netflix with all 8 episodes released on June 1, 2023.[1]

...

The series follows Japanese government officials, Tokyo Electric Power Company employees and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant employees in Okuma, Japan in the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The massive waves and structural damage cause damage to the Nuclear Power Plant leading to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The series explores the series of events in the immediate aftermath, where some consider the people involved to be heroes who prevented a much larger nuclear disaster, while others blame them for not preventing the disaster that occurred.

I don't think my partner has seen Nip/Tuck. Might put it on and see if they like it. I thought it was great.

Kodachrome Ghosts is a YouTube channel that posts home movies shot on 8mm and Super 8. I think the channel editor sources the film and digitises it. I think it's neat. The films are often short clips. I find the videos to be a refreshing break from all the hoo haa that dominates YouTube.

The channel description:

Preserving the past, this channel is dedicated to home movies shot on 8mm and Super 8 that gives us a window into the past. These are films that may not have been viewed for years and at some point may have been destined to be lost forever. I firmly believe that films such as these hold as much importance as professionally made film. Capturing people, places and events that are a part of our history.

Thanks to whoever originally posted about this channel, or posted one of the videos from this channel that brought it to my attention.
