I am trying to convince my group to switch from WhatsApp to Signal and we plan to vote on it soon. So, I plan to use the replies in this thread to compile a list of reasons to use as talking points. Preferably, I need something that can be understood on a personal level as some of my friends are deeply cynical and have no concern about escaping techno-feudalism and surveillance.

The washing machine panel thing in my apartment has these metal buttons that are perhaps the most satisfying metal buttons I've ever pressed in my life. If my neurospicy brain had a swimming pool of these things I would die happily of starvation while flopping around pressing as many as I could. How in the world do I track down a featureless metal button and know I'm getting the right thing without being able to press them before buying? Are there like names for different types of buttons? What kind of rabbit hole am I looking at here? I want to refit my computer to have one of these things as my power button

We all know the pictures of the astronauts on the ISS floating around. We also suspect that a lack of gravity is bad for the body as the muscles go weak and such.

Why don't spaceships just rotate to cause the effect of artificial gravity through centrifugal forces?

I try to give the most grace possible. I've only ever blocked two users here. That said, I'd totally understand why someone might block me.

By all rights, this should be something I am deeply passionate about. I've been in tech/engineering my entire adult life and was obsessed with NASA as a kid. I even live on the east coast of Florida and can sometimes see the launches/landings over the ocean. But I just... don't care at all. I'm not suffering from depression or any other malaise, and generally things are fine. But I haven't clicked on a single link or looked at a single image. I know this has not been the case for many, many people, so I'm wondering what might be different about this launch (or really the whole program in general), and curious if anyone else has found themselves feeling the same.

Love or hate just please explain why. This isn't my area of expertise so I'd love to hear your opinions, especially if you're particularly well versed or involved. If you have any literature, studies or websites let me know.

I'm trying not to think about reality and want to hear about the far edges of people's moral horizons.

So I grew up very sheltered and isolated from society and as a result missed out on a lot of pop culture and other common things. I love to read, and I really enjoy fantasy and DnD and those types of things and I'm trying to find and catch up on the great fantasy books/series that every fantasy lover/nerd should know. I'm not as interested in sci-fi, but I'm willing to read the "great" ones too. What would you recommend?

I do. Most stations in my region are just crappy music and dumb call-in shows, but there's still a few stations with quality programming. FM radio is where I get my news, where I listen to press conferences, old-school audio theatre and (surprisingly) where I get new music recommendations. Hard to believe that modern streaming platforms' algorithms can be outperformed by traditional media.

And what disadvantages? Like pricing or licensing terms?

See here's the thing:

You have to remember:

1. BIOS password (you're supposed to set one, right? I mean... so your that sibling/roomate/kids/family doesnt mess around and replace your OS with a malicious OS)
2. Full Disk Encryption password and then finally
3. The user password

Like that kinds breaks my brain

Do y'all just put those in your password manager... then only have to remember

1. Master Password to password vault and
2. Phone lockscreen

But if you are paranoid and set a full alphanumeric password/passphrase... then you have to remember two differen passphrases...

Or couldn't you just simplify it to like just ONE, like:

Can you have the same password for Phone Lockscreen as the Password Vault Master Password?

So that you Only ever need to remember exactly ONE password

Yes, I know they're scummy as fuck. Yes I know they're gonna turn it into yet another overpriced rental. But I'm mostly asking if they're otherwise legit.

I get those offers all the time and typically shitcan them immediately. The most recent offer I got is for twice what I paid for the place, and honestly, it's enough to be my ticket out of this backwards-ass shithole state. Otherwise, barring a surprise lottery windfall, I'm stuck here for the foreseeable future.

Assuming all is above board, the main concern I have is if it's worth that much to them, wouldn't it be worth that much to me? FWIW, I like my house and my neighborhood, but it sadly exists within a shithole of a redneck state where I've been disenfranchised all my life, and I want the fuck out of here.
