This is why open source AI is necessary!

Oh right! I completely forgot.

It's happening to the guy in front 👍

...if you take these companies statements at face value and ignore all the other, more realistic reasons why they're laying people off.

If your language requires an IDE to show you WTF is going on in the code, it's a bad language.

Given, there's ways to write poor code in any language, but some are much, much worse than others. Java and JavaScript being the kings of that kind of thing.

Some day, AI assisted coding will become so intelligent that it will look at your average "enterprise" Java code and ask the user, "WTF were they even trying to do here?" Which is the only correct response a lot of the time.

Thank you for posting this comment. I came here to write the exact same thing and now I don't have to!

👍

Guy in the back is going to get his kneecaps kicked out.

Into the volcano you go!

Seriously though, sacrificing the old to save the young is not so unethical. That's sort of how life is supposed to work.

"Last one in is a rotten old person!" -I'll shout as I cut the line and jump off in front of you.

"Cannonball!"

There is a story people tell about AI regulation, and it goes like this: the technology is moving too fast, governments can't keep up, regulators are overwhelmed, and by the time anyone writes a law the thing they're trying to regulate has already evolved into something else entirely.

No. That's not the story people are telling about AI regulation. It goes like this:

If we regulate AI, that will give an advantage to AI companies in other countries. They will surpass our AI capabilities and leave us in the technological dust.

There's a related story:

If we regulate AI, we're likely to create more problems because Boomers don't understand technology.

For those wondering how TF a data center that is not even online yet could be using so much water:

  • Soil compaction
  • Dust suppression

That's it. For the scale of that project, that's all it would take to use 30 million gallons.

When they're done, they also need to flush miles of pipes which could also use a few million gallons but I don't think they're at that phase yet.

This amount of water would be used no matter what buildings they were constructing in that amount of space. Meaning: This article is pretty misleading clickbait (because a lot of people hate data centers lately, the headline will generate clicks).

The alternative is to have loads of data centers instead of one big one. That's more expensive, so they build a single big one.

If you don't like data centers, it makes sense to build a few really, really big ones like this rather than lots of smaller ones. Because data centers are necessary and important aspects of modern living. They're not going to just go away. There's nothing that could replace them.

Koalas have nearly identical fingerprints as well:

Did you just look askance at some writing that uses an uncommon word, thinking, "I keep seeing this word... has it suddenly become popular?"

It could be the Frequency Illusion!

Decades ago, I moved from Massachusetts to Florida. When I moved from that house to a new one, I discovered an unopened bathroom fan motor + blower wheel in the attic (left by a previous owner). "Nice" (head nod) I said to myself, and threw it in with everything else in the moving boxes.

Of course, my wife told me to "just leave it" and "you're such a hoarder!" It stayed in that box when we moved again a decade later.

Today, one of our bathroom exhaust fans stopped working (for the 2nd time) so I decided to reach deep into my hoard of random crap. "I have just the thing!" I still remembered which box it was in and where I stored it in the attic above the garage!

BONUS: The old bracket nuts didn't fit the new motor so I had to fish around in my collection of random nuts, bolts, and screws to find two exact matches. Which I had, of course—because I save all the screws of all the things 👍

I saved ~$37 and a trip to the hardware store today!

River Monsters was cancelled because they ran out of monsters! They literally caught them all (Note: This is the real reason; I'm not making that up!).

Because of this—and the impressive staying power/popularity of the show over time—the executives have decided to fund continuing research to discover a new world, and this research has finally bore fruit!

A new world—full of rivers—has finally been found! Because of their continuous funding, they get first crack at it.

A daring crew is assembled, they start recording, and enter the portal...

I'm guessing that we'll see lots of news in 2026 about how companies are hiring developers to help improve the memory efficiency of their software because they just can't get enough servers. Also, the servers they do get will have reduced RAM compared to what they wanted.

He gets out of Windows! 😀👍

The fire extinguisher in my garage is almost 20 years old now and the pressure gauge is right at the edge of the red zone. That means it's time to order a new one!

Decided to get two because it seems like a good idea to have one out by the grill (and they're a better deal that way) 👍

Very excited because this means I get to ~~play~~ teach the kids how to properly use a fire extinguisher with the old one! Been a while since we used the fire pit out back...

The genie asked the man, "do you wish you were worth a lot of money?"

Onlookers watched in horror as the quickest among them broke off large golden chunks of the statue before they could even get close to claim their own prize.

Pool pump has been a bit weak lately: The stream of water pouring out of the hot tub "waterfall" into the main pool had become more like a trickle. This usually indicates a significant clog or that the pool filter needs cleaning.

Considering I haven't cleaned the filter in almost a year I figured that was likely the problem. It wasn't 😮‍💨

Turns out that there's something stuck in the intake at the bottom of the pool which means I have to dive deep with a screwdriver in the super cold water and carefully clear out whatever is in there. Probably a plastic bag or similar.

Note: Never attempt such a thing while the pump is on! In fact, lock it down with some tape and maybe a warning label that says not to turn it on while you're doing your difficult work.

Been a long time since I had to hold my breath under water. I wonder if I can still reach 2 minutes? 🤔 Probably not with this water temperature 🤣

I just watched the final episode of If My Wife Becomes an Elementary School Student and I had to write something about it... When I first read the description of this anime I thought it looked stupid, "Another low effort anime." But of course I watched it anyway (because I run out of episodes fast on Sundays, haha) and it turned out fantastic!

The description is accurate but severely understates the concept: It's not a comedy but more akin to sci-fi or isekai with a, "what if?" scenario. What would it be like if your dead wife suddenly appears in the form of a little kid, saying she reincarnated? It does a pretty good job of going into the emotions and real-world problems (Japanese 🤣) people would run into in such a situation.

For example, what about the mother of the little girl‽ Wouldn't she be like, "WTF‽" Ummm... Yeah she would! And the show explores that aspect of the concept as well as the family of the deceased.

I highly recommend this anime. It'd probably be a great show to watch with your partner too. Also, make sure to have some tissues handy to soak up the tears!
