Bah! I think birds are fowl.

I browse "All" most of the time and the Femcel Memes show up pretty regularly. It's not like this gif though. It's more like watching a super interesting science experiment.

"Ah, yes. I see. I see. How interesting!"

My scientific notes so far:

  • They crave cuddles. It's almost like a cuddle-based economy.

I swear, if there's an afterlife, you won't be judged based on how good or bad you were. It'll be based on your hypocrisy.

Example 1

Death: "You were a mob boss. You had many people injured, tortured, and murdered. Did you ever try to fool anyone into thinking you were not a mobster? That you were innocent?"

Mobster soul: "Only law enforcement! I mean, everyone knew I was the head of a criminal organization. I was a proud mob boss! I acted accordingly and never misrepresented myself!"

Death: "You will be reincarnated. We have many worlds in need of villains."

Example 2

Death: "You were a politician, fraudster, and serial philanderer. You took many lovers in secret. Made many promises you never kept. That you never intended to keep."

Politician soul: "Guilty as charged! But hey, I gave millions to charity! I was super polite and never personally physically harmed a single person. I mean, so many people thought I was great! Obviously, that means I was!"

Death: "You will serve in hell."

The tech firm was not named by the court.

Why the fuck not‽

The fact that this is even possible in China blows my mind. Court proceedings should always be a matter of public record unless there's some grand reason like national security concerns or victims that could face very real danger from their names becoming public.

Their... menace?

I love Canada Dry Zero. It tastes great if it's really cold.

Zero sugar (uses aspartame)

Don't they already have a king?

I have zero faith in faith-based anything. Because no one should. That counts 10x when it's run by or featured by the government.

Just another way the Trump administration wants to enable pedophiles and sexual predators.

One look at this picture and I was like, "oh dam!"

[–] riskable@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

the doc has no clue what the third party does or doesn’t do with my data

The doc would have no clue what his local IT staff do with his data, either. Furthermore, for all you know, the doctor isn't deleting the things they record. In all of these scenarios, it's 100% out of your control. Even if it's local. Because it's not your hardware and it's not your business (as in, you don't own the doctor's office/hospital).

What you're complaining about is contract law. You obviously don't trust it. That has nothing to do with your voice being sent to servers in an Amazon data center. The 3rd party transcription service provider is under contract not to share your data and so is Amazon. Just like the doctor's office is required by law not to share your data without your consent (which I guarantee you gave them permission for when you did your paperwork at that office).

Now let me take a step back for a second and ask a more serious question: Why do you care? I mean, I can think of several reasons why someone could care about theirs and their doctor's voices being recorded but why do you, specifically care? What's the "this is a problem" scenario you're worried about?

Let me ask you a serious question: How would you limit the construction of AI data centers VS regular ones? Or even a data center inside of an existing office building? Or a data center that's just a backup location (where half of the equipment might not even be turned on all the time)?

How do you enforce such a thing? I could build a totally normal data center, then install a bunch of Nvidia HBMs and no one would know. You'd need a specific legal entity, the Data Center Police that dictate how, when, and why any given type of hardware gets used.

On the face of it, it's a huge violation of freedom of speech. Because you'd have to look into what specific software and data was being run/used on the hardware to see if it's related to AI and not, say, a CGI rendering farm. Or protein folding. Or physics/medical research. All of which use the same exact hardware.

I'm not saying you can't regulate data centers. You just can't regulate what people do with any given hardware.

My recommendation: Regulate data centers in these ways:

  • They must be powered by local renewable energy. None of this, "we bought carbon credits" bullshit.
  • If they need water cooling, they must use water from local retention ponds. Not the local potable water supply (using reclaimed water would be OK though).

Implement those two requirements and no one would have any basis to be bitching about data centers, specifically. There's much, much worse business/industrial buildings than data centers.

Aside: Data centers are just climate-controlled office buildings (with extra cooling). They just sit there. From a noise perspective, they're on par with a warehouse. In fact, warehouses that stay open 24/7 are much, much worse because of the truck traffic and forklifts. While a data center is a 24/7, low-frequency hum (on the outside, nearby), a warehouse is going to be shaking things nearby.

...and nothing is worse than busy train tracks! I slept at a friend's place for a few days that lived next to an elevated train (across the street from his window). There's no way a data center is worse than that! No way.

Since mice are prey animals, their brain architecture and brain scaling would likely result in them seeing little visions of their predators (e.g. cats/birds) or they'd smell hundreds of miniature mice that they couldn't really see (like synesthesia).

Did you just look askance at some writing that uses an uncommon word, thinking, "I keep seeing this word... has it suddenly become popular?"

It could be the Frequency Illusion!

Decades ago, I moved from Massachusetts to Florida. When I moved from that house to a new one, I discovered an unopened bathroom fan motor + blower wheel in the attic (left by a previous owner). "Nice" (head nod) I said to myself, and threw it in with everything else in the moving boxes.

Of course, my wife told me to "just leave it" and "you're such a hoarder!" It stayed in that box when we moved again a decade later.

Today, one of our bathroom exhaust fans stopped working (for the 2nd time) so I decided to reach deep into my hoard of random crap. "I have just the thing!" I still remembered which box it was in and where I stored it in the attic above the garage!

BONUS: The old bracket nuts didn't fit the new motor so I had to fish around in my collection of random nuts, bolts, and screws to find two exact matches. Which I had, of course—because I save all the screws of all the things 👍

I saved ~$37 and a trip to the hardware store today!

River Monsters was cancelled because they ran out of monsters! They literally caught them all (Note: This is the real reason; I'm not making that up!).

Because of this—and the impressive staying power/popularity of the show over time—the executives have decided to fund continuing research to discover a new world, and this research has finally bore fruit!

A new world—full of rivers—has finally been found! Because of their continuous funding, they get first crack at it.

A daring crew is assembled, they start recording, and enter the portal...

I'm guessing that we'll see lots of news in 2026 about how companies are hiring developers to help improve the memory efficiency of their software because they just can't get enough servers. Also, the servers they do get will have reduced RAM compared to what they wanted.

He gets out of Windows! 😀👍

The fire extinguisher in my garage is almost 20 years old now and the pressure gauge is right at the edge of the red zone. That means it's time to order a new one!

Decided to get two because it seems like a good idea to have one out by the grill (and they're a better deal that way) 👍

Very excited because this means I get to ~~play~~ teach the kids how to properly use a fire extinguisher with the old one! Been a while since we used the fire pit out back...

The genie asked the man, "do you wish you were worth a lot of money?"

Onlookers watched in horror as the quickest among them broke off large golden chunks of the statue before they could even get close to claim their own prize.

Pool pump has been a bit weak lately: The stream of water pouring out of the hot tub "waterfall" into the main pool had become more like a trickle. This usually indicates a significant clog or that the pool filter needs cleaning.

Considering I haven't cleaned the filter in almost a year I figured that was likely the problem. It wasn't 😮‍💨

Turns out that there's something stuck in the intake at the bottom of the pool which means I have to dive deep with a screwdriver in the super cold water and carefully clear out whatever is in there. Probably a plastic bag or similar.

Note: Never attempt such a thing while the pump is on! In fact, lock it down with some tape and maybe a warning label that says not to turn it on while you're doing your difficult work.

Been a long time since I had to hold my breath under water. I wonder if I can still reach 2 minutes? 🤔 Probably not with this water temperature 🤣

I just watched the final episode of If My Wife Becomes an Elementary School Student and I had to write something about it... When I first read the description of this anime I thought it looked stupid, "Another low effort anime." But of course I watched it anyway (because I run out of episodes fast on Sundays, haha) and it turned out fantastic!

The description is accurate but severely understates the concept: It's not a comedy but more akin to sci-fi or isekai with a, "what if?" scenario. What would it be like if your dead wife suddenly appears in the form of a little kid, saying she reincarnated? It does a pretty good job of going into the emotions and real-world problems (Japanese 🤣) people would run into in such a situation.

For example, what about the mother of the little girl‽ Wouldn't she be like, "WTF‽" Ummm... Yeah she would! And the show explores that aspect of the concept as well as the family of the deceased.

I highly recommend this anime. It'd probably be a great show to watch with your partner too. Also, make sure to have some tissues handy to soak up the tears!
