I feel like a healthy dose of skepticism is important lest we end up with only puff pieces. In fact, the Wright Brothers were dismissed for years: https://bigthink.com/the-past/wright-brothers-ignored/

I fear our only hope is states taking on the responsibilities. But with taxes going to the federal gov that's a tall order.

I know lots of important issues are getting pushed aside for one another, over and over. And Patel's handling of the FBI is a real issue. I don't like saying any issue is a distraction. But considering everything else going on, even just with Patel, isn't personalized bourbon a but of a Dijon-mustard-level distraction?

Red reader is pretty good. There's also patches in revanced to make rif work. But yeah, reddit is a shell of what it once was.

But angry bigot nurses frowning in portraits know best, right?

If that's what you want, put together a coalition and gather the signatures.

I'm quite anti-smoking and don't like nicotine in general, but I don't like this level prohibition of any substance.

They're not beholden to public investors. If they go public or sell to a public company it will change.

Agreed. To me, this blog post felt like a elevated rant. There's not much meaningful analysis or substantive criticism of actual games or game design. There's some comparative insight that is worth thinking through, but in the post it's all wrapped up in rants about how one side of the comparison is bad and doesn't really hone in on the nuances of the comparisons.

Notably, the discussion of game length (a key point of this post) is thin, especially when discussing the comparison to film and music.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course. Overall, for the comparative insight, it's probably worth reading for people who like to think about these things, despite the issues within.

9 minutes less sleep nightly sounds pretty significant for a single cause. That's about 2%. If anything I think this article demonstrates that blue light does affect your sleep.

There was a post the other day about dark patterns that linked to a website that I felt did a terrible job presenting dark patterns. My main fear was that such information risked creating a moral panic that could encourage bullying people who enjoyed certain types of games.

In this video, Chris Wilson, former director of Path of Exile, speaks in depth on dark patterns. In the latter half of the video, he makes some clear distinctions about game systems versus meta systems, and how dark patterns manifest. I believe such distinctions are very important when making such moral judgements about video games.

Josh Johnson's weekly comedy special is really on point today, for Americans afraid or angry about the government trying to take away their rights.

The entire thing is worth watching, but some of her concluding thoughts:

And the truth is [...] As with all modern famines and all genocides, what this boils down to right now is a very small group of people in positions of power needing to make different choices, basically needing to be different people, which won't happen. So the reality is there is not much we can do. But I do not want that to be mistaken for saying that we should not do what we can.

[...]

Second, I don't think constant international attention, the increasing international attention is doing nothing. The fact that focus has stayed on this issue in the news could make the difference in saving a lot of lives. In the words of one Holocaust survivor:

Today's marches are having a very hopeful aspect. It is so large, so persistent, so global, that eventually the Western leadership, which are trying to deny what is actually going on, will be forced to face up to it. And I think we are not far from that.

[...]

I am personally exhausted that the fact that this even is a controversy in the first place, that we here in the US are in the position of having to claw back rights that most of us took for granted our whole lives, but it must be done. We can't do everything, but we must do what we can.

This could be the end of much of the fediverse, especially the more left-leaning parts.
