I use Mint. I tried Ubuntu several times and ran into dependency issues. Mint has extra stuff you won't need, but it "just works". And no Snap.

When you boot the computer, each device identifies itself to the OS using a combination of a vendor code and a device code. In Terminal, try the following two commands:

lspci lsusb

You have to have APN setup properly with settings from your carrier. Do a web search for your carrier + iOS + APN
