You might've been misled there: bezos is an early investor in slate, but he doesn't own the company and doesn't even currently have representation on the company's board. Bezos reportedly hasn't been involved in decision-making for the company and doesn't have an ownership stake, so I'm willing to accept that slate simply took his early support without handing him the reins
