I know I’m late to the party but I have recently been obsessed with this same topic. GURPS Fantasy does cover this topic as well and, similar to WFRP, splits settlements into isolates, villages, market villages, towns, and cities.
In general tough I look at it from the angle of “where does the food come from?” Which, depending on if the mode of transport consumes the food too (e.g. grain and draft animals), may only be a few days travel from the city; unless there are rivers etc. that can help move goods further easier.
Should plan it so that they were recently trained and briefed on their mission on that new planet, so instead of being just after they’ve argued with their parents they have just finished their training
Follow-on showerthought: you can only really fail a test that is designed to determine if you need glasses by cheating on said test.
Or you could have a publicly owned payment scheme that uses regular money, see debit cards in France (and Germany?)
Or the mobile payment options in Sweden and Norway (and also Denmark maybe?)
You don’t need crypto to fulfill the same function as Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, etc.
