It's used as a pejorative. It's disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

Not necessarily imitate their art (which would probably result in artistically more interesting works), but mainly present the foreign people and cultures in an exoticising and stereotyped manner, as objects of fascination rather than normal culture.

The bold section sounds like presentation as an object of fascination.

They exercised self-determination in deciding against joining, but you deem it appropriate to disregard that and group them with something they chose not to become part of?

This is a technical YDI with a heaping side of CLM(s). The comm rules spell out that Substack is verboten, even though the rule itself is misguided. Expect any such posts to be removed, most likely by the mod in question, until such point that either the rule or the modlist changes.

The continued presence of such a technicality in the rules degrades the credibility of the comm as a whole.

The powertrip here is less the application of the rule and more the total unwillingness to adapt the rule. It's being used as a tool against legitimate news from legitimate sources. It could be confirmation bias, but I do not recall seeing widespread enforcement of this particular rule by moderators other than Jordan. If that is erroneous, then it's my mistake, but based on that I believe the inclusion of Substack in that list to be Jordan's pet contribution.

If the other mods feel the same way, perhaps they'll make that known.

Éowyn isn't her true name, Ann is. She is a gnome. I thought this was well-established.

Semi-related, is your username in reference to a Ranger?

I have never been a fan of popularity contests, therefore I would hate to see them implemented so directly here.

One could even argue that the very concept runs counter to the spirit of the instance by way of establishing a social hierarchy of sorts.

One episode.

Just to clarify, the db0 admins rub you the wrong way (I do not personally care for all of them) and strike you as quashing dissent enough to not move over from .world, but the .world admins don't bother you or push narratives enough to warrant leaving?

The moderator was happy enough to quote the first clause of the first sentence, but totally ignored the entire rest of the paragraph explaining the expectations; “Trek-adjacent discussions, other scifi, navigating the fediverse, server meta (within reason)…,” presumably because it doesn’t fit with his reasoning.

And you're happy enough to leave off "it's all fair game" presumably because it doesn't fit with your reasoning.

Is a ban justified? Probably not, it certainly feels like an overreach. Are you as blameless and beyond reproach as you would have everyone believe? Also probably not.

I do not believe that the whole of the story is being presented.

Edit: Scrolling through the recent posts on that particular community, it appears to have been a complete hodgepodge of topics for some time. I fail to see why the post in question is a bridge too far. ESH.
