I never realized just how horrifying some of the art in that set was. Crawling Chorus is pretty messed up!

One of the first decks I ever played competitively was an artifact/red deck during Urza's block constructed that I had seen from him. He of course won the 1999 WC with a better busted version of it too, which I also built for casual play. I loved that deck and still do, some of the most fun I ever had was ramping into Wildfires and Temporal Apertures! I will always think of him when I think of those days.

I didn't realize just how much he was the GOAT too. 5 Pro Tour titles and 2 World Championships. Absolutely amazing career and a truly amazing guy.

Yeah each one of these gives the ability, so if you have 2 in play then all other creatures have essentially ward: pay 4 life (it’s 2 triggered abilities of 2 life each though).

This is fun with Melira, Sylvok Outcast! Just a 6/6 trample with ward:2 for 2cmc.

Seems like an auto include for any EDH tribal deck

Wow a reciprocal effect in 2026?? Love it!

If the card is targeted by a spell or ability, it gets countered unless the other player pays the ward cost (MTG Wiki).

If I tried to Shock your Hexing Squelcher, for instance, I'd have to pay 2 life or else the Shock would get countered.

End of an era 😞 He was one of the artists that got me into Magic originally, just loved his lands. Thanks for so many awesome cards!

This card seems like one of the strongest hate bears ever...

Even helps in a UR deck so that your counters are uncounterable!

Ah thanks, that makes these alternative ward costs pretty strong

Pretty strong synergy with evoke. As if a lot of the pitch elementals needed something to boost them!

Pretty cool design. Does this ward cost mean that if you don’t have a creature to put the counters onto, whatever you targeted it with is always countered?

Quicksilver, Brash Blur
R
Legendary Creature — Mutant Hero

If ~ is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with him on the battlefield.

Haste

Power up — 4R: Put a +1/+1 counter and a double strike counter on ~. (Activate each power-up ability only once. Reduce the cost by his mana cost if he entered this turn.)

Captain America, Super-Soldier
1WW
Legendary Creature - Human Soldier Hero

First strike
Captain America enters with a shield counter on him. (If he would be dealt damage or destroyed, remove a shield counter from him instead.)
As long as Captain America has a shield counter on him, you and other Heroes you control have hexproof.
