I'm pretty much in the same boat. But I do lurk on Reddit sometimes when I'm looking to doomscroll, but I often find that the ads and bots prevent me from enjoying the doomscroll mindlessness.

I thought it'd be funny to share this post, because it looks like some people are becoming fed up with reddit for all the reasons that have been glaringly obvious for years now. Eventhough this is likely a bot post. Which might make it even funnier.

I just found out reddit sold everything we wrote to AI companies... and honestly I don't know how to feel

So I was reading about Reddit's API controversy from 2023 and fell down a rabbit hole.

Turns out every post, every comment, every opinion you've shared here - reddit licensed it to openai and google. No opt-out. No warning. Just. - done.

And that's just reddit. Meanwhile Google, Meta, and basically every major platform are quietly building a profile on you — your interests, your political leanings, your daily routine, your insecurities. All from things you said or clicked on "anonymously."

The wild part? We already knew this was happening. It's not new. Yet here we all are, still posting.

So I'm genuinely curious — why do you still use reddit (or big tech in general) knowing this?

Is it because:

  • The alternatives (Lemmy- kbin- etc..) just aren't there yet?
  • You've accepted it as the price of the internet
  • You actually don't think it's that big a deal?
  • Or you simply never thought about it until now?

Not judging anyone — I'm still here too. Just want to hear honest answers.

I'm not sure about the technicallities, but yes, that's my experience. Yesterday I had someone delete a post while I was commenting on it and when I pressed send, it gave an error. I could still see the post, because I had it loaded in my app, but when I went to look at the poster, they didn't have it in their history anymore. I could still navigate back to the post then, but now I can't find it anymore.

Probably the auther changed their mind. Maybe because they thought it wasn't a good question after all. Maybe they didn't like the comments. You'd have to ask the author, if you still have the post loaded somewhere.

Holy shit! It's so easy and accesible. The best part is that it's simpky build in to linux (or wsl). It's just a terminal command "vimtutor".

I'm astonished that nobody has ever told me about this before.

I learned only yesterday that Google is going to effectively shut down open android. So I'm gonna have to move away from there. But what are my options? Is there a nice website that lists and compares alternatives?

I hear that Graphene is the goat, but I'm not on a pixel phone. Currently I'm on a Samsung galaxy a15

I hear about lineageOS as a good second, but it sounds like Google's decision to close down android might affect lineage too.

I hear about others, but I'm not too well versed in running obscure OS.

Het is natuurlijk oerstom hoe dit zo heeft kunnen gebeuren. Odido heeft abssoluut fouten gemaakt en het is terecht om daar wat van te zeggen, misschien zelfs je contract opzeggen. Laten we echter niet vergeten dat deze hackersgroep uit doorgewinterde professionals bestaat. Het zijn mensen wiens fulltime baan het is om zich voor te doen als een betrouwbaar persoon om jouw sociale verdedigingen te mitigeren en je te overtuigen om een deurtje open te zetten.

Het is een enorm moeilijke taak om je tegen dit soort aanvallen te weren. Het is bijna onvoorkoombaar. Natuurlijk zijn er protocollen en trainingen voor personeel. Daar heeft odido wel steken laten vallen,maar er is maar 1 zwakke schakel nodig in een ketting van duizenden schakels.

Wat odido goed heeft gedaan is niet betalen. Wanneer slachtoffers dit soort criminelen gaan betalen, krijgt het business model van de criminelen legitimiteit. Nu hebben de hackers maandenlang moeite gestopt in Odido en ze hebben er niks voor terug gekregen. Nog een paar keer zo'n tegenvaller en deze hackersgroep kan de koffers pakken.
