Thank you! Someone’s currently chewing me out for being a right wing gun nut (I’m British and pretty left wing) who’s no better than Elon musk because I don’t post OC (?) and accusing me of breaking my own rules, so it’s really nice to have a positive interaction! I’m under no allusion that I have all the answers, or that I won’t make mistakes but I’m just one person and I’m trying my best. Thank you for being nice!

I messaged the commenter above twice to get to the bottom of this but they never responded. I have to assume it’s the post itself, and if that’s the case, I disagree that this is transphobic. I’m the poster and the only mod of this community (although I’ve repeatedly asked for more mods and opened a sticky post to debate any issues that arise, I’ve had no takers) so ultimately I have to make the decision - unless content is against lemmy’s rules, which this is not. It’s a tricky position to be in tbh. My thinking is that while it may not be what we want to hear, while it might not fit seamlessly with the assertion that trans women are women (which I agree with wholeheartedly), there is no insult, no hatred here.
Ross tucker is a legitimate sport scientist and can’t find any controversy about him online. The issue of AMAB athletes (particularly those who went through puberty) competing as women in professional sport is a dicey subject. Even before trans people were better represented in professional sport AFAB athletes were sometimes prevented from competing because their testosterone levels were naturally high, while athletes with genetic abnormalities like Phelps get to compete, despite them having a clear advantage. The whole thing is a mess.
All Ross Tucker is saying is that there hasn’t been remotely enough research yet to come to a scientific consensus, and even with that consensus it will take a monumental shift in the attitudes of athletes, sporting bodies and fans before we come to a widely agreed upon and scientifically sound set of rules for trans athletes. That’s objectively correct.
Banning any discussion at all around this issue, just in case it’s perceived as transphobic is censorship, and that doesn’t help anyone. We shouldn’t shy away from important conversations, as long as people remain civil and do not insult others. To my mind Ross Tucker’s tweet is civil and doesn’t insult anyone, and the vast majority of replies to this post follow suit. Any that haven’t followed the rules have been deleted and the posters have received a first and final warning that they will be banned if they make bigoted comments here again.
I’m very open to discussing whether we should continue to allow posts such as these, but I’d rather it be in a place with more visibility and more people contributing. This community has 2.5k subscribers and this post received just one comment suggesting it was transphobic. I’m more than happy to amend the rules of the community but I think we need at least 0.5% of subscribers to weigh in before I do that. Please feel free to start the conversation in the stickied post, or create your own discussion thread. I appreciate your input 💚
I mean, we fucked up the world for centuries so it’s gotta be pretty high. Would you blame Native Americans and indigenous Canadians losing their language on the English or the Americans/Canadians out of interest? We certainly got the ball rolling, but the new North Americans saw it through.
No. Transphobia, along with any form of bigotry, is against the rules of this community, the instance, and lemmy. Please report any comments that break the rules, which can be found in the sidebar. There’s also a stickied post asking for moderators and requesting feedback on the way the community is managed.
I’m pretty sure McDonald’s Cyrus isn’t a bot.
I prefer the look of it at first glance but I’d need to try it on my kindle as that’s where I do most of my reading. Afaik kindle only supports open dyslexic.
EDIT: @jackbydev I just wanted to say thanks for the tip on the font. I’ve been using it on my kindle since you told me about it. It’s doesn’t work quite as well as open dyslexic for me but it works enough for me to use it as my default font - and it’s so much nicer to look at!
It kinda “anchors” the text so the letters stay where they’re meant to. A tiny spot in centre of my vision is blurry, sometimes I miss words in the middle of a sentence. For some reason this font helps with that.
I’m not dyslexic but I have macular issues which make reading a bit difficult. Switching to the open dyslexic font on my kindle has been a game changer.
Follow up tweet here: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/marco-rubio-german-dam/ I’m not fully convinced, “explosion at the…” vs “according to…” seems more than just a typo to me.
I think we can safely say that is nitpicking, but it’s informative and correct so I’m all for it!
From my biology lessons 20 years ago, I thought I was taught that it was the presence of a second X chromosome that made a person genetically female, but I could definitely be misremembering. Either way, XXY individuals are usually born male, and Dr Genetics Federation was likely talking about sawyer syndrome (or so google tells me). Thanks for the correction!
And 5 time finalist of the Eureka Prize - which sounds impressive even if I’ve never heard of it!
I’m immunosuppressed so even though I’ve had 6 vaccines now, I still might not have built up enough antibodies to help me survive covid if I catch it. I don’t really go anywhere and wear a mask when I do so I’m as safe as I can be… Except I need a carer to help me out for about 8 hours a week and an unbelievable amount of self employed carers aren’t vaccinated. These are people who work with the elderly and vulnerable and they refuse to get vaccinated. It’s absolutely mind boggling to me.
