Based on your systemd output, it looks like the system is taking a long while to decrypt your drive. Is it a spinning disk, or an SSD?

I'm not sure if the PC repair shop specifically checked your drive, but it might be worth swapping out for another. Or maybe run some speed tests and/or diagnostics to see if there's something funky going on.

You could also try an unencrypted install to see if the problem persists.

Looks like you've already had some help fixing your system. I'd recommend reading the arch wiki pages on encryption. Even if you're not running arch, the wiki is a good source of up-to-date information, and contains many practical tips.

This section about setting up your /etc/crypttab to unlock a non-root filesystem at boot might be useful. Even if you don't want to unlock at boot, it explains how crypttab works: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/System_configuration#crypttab.

There's another useful section if you want to decrypt on demand after boot: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/System_configuration#Mounting_on_demand

Lastly, if you're experimenting with fstab entries for a non-root device, consider setting nofail so that if you screw anything up the system still boots. This section is somewhat relevant: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fstab#External_devices

Basically, you need both a crypttab entry and an fstab entry to open and then mount the device.

I got a secondhand Amscope a few weeks back. Haven't used it for soldering yet, because I need a proper temperature controlled iron with finer tips than my current one.

It's been great for pulling splinters out of my fingers though!

Can't we just toss some C4 at it?

Not even sure if my posts will be federated with this community.

Once I get some furniture back from the repair shop (fuck you, shipping company), I'll have something to share.

I recently got a nice deal on a stereo microscope, and leapt at the chance. I've had a few projects in mind that would entail SMD soldering, and now all I need is a proper soldering station.

My current iron is pretty basic, but gets the job done for splicing wires and DIP work. Now I want something with temp control and a good supply of tips.

It seems like hobbyists are all talking about affordable Chinese T12 stations from brands like KSGER and Quecoo. There are just so many different models, it's hard to understand the features and differences. It also seems like there's a lot of "Reddit folk knowledge" where people just keep repeating what others have said. Eg: People say that some KSGER stations have no case grounding, but nobody says which models do or don't have the issue. All of them? Then people talk about the microcontrollers STM vs STC, but nobody says why it matters.

Burning bridges, lost forevermore

Given that The Prisoner is one of my favorite shows, I immediately read it wrong so that the sign made complete sense.

Not sure if you're able to edit the title, but this doesn't look like FOSS, just open source.

Played DX a few times, but the only part of the plot that never fully makes sense to me is Maggie Chow:

  • She is an MJ12 plant who knows JC is Paul's brother, but doesn't know he's a fugitive? Or she does know he's a fugitive but doesn't call her MJ12 guards to take him out?
  • She sends JC to the police station on a mission to steal information, but then the information incriminates her. Why? JC even asks her what she expected to happen.

Not so much a plot thing, but I also find it strange that she runs up to fight JC in Versalife with just a sword and no armor. It's the least threatening fight in the game. I know the people in Hong Kong say she used to do Kung Fu movies, it would have been cool if there was some allusion to that during the fight.

Just moving in to our first home, and I'm very excited to have the freedom to set up a permanent HF antenna.

I'll probably build a sort of fan dipole and run it along the side of our property. That's the only place long enough to fit. However, the power lines for the neighborhood run over part of our backyard. I'm not worried about my dipole being too close to high voltage power (it won't be) but I wonder if the AC frequency can cause interference on certain bands?

Sorry, what's .Net again?

The runtime? You mean .Net, or .Net Core, or .Net Framework? Oh, you mean a web framework in .Net. Was that Asp.Net or AspNetcore?

Remind me why we let the "Can't call it Windows 9" company design our enterprise language?

Firstly, discord is entirely the wrong medium for documentation.

Secondly, documentation should be at least as accessible as the code. That is to say, if I can view the code without creating an account for some service, then I should also be able to read the documentation too.

I think that's not the problem that this technology is intended to solve.

It's not a "Is this picture copied from someone else?" technology. It's a "Did a human take this picture, and did anyone modify it?" technology.

Eg: Photographer Bob takes a picture of Famous Fiona driving her camaro and posts it online with this metadata. Attacker Andy uses photo editing tools to make it look like Fiona just ran over a child. Maybe his skills are so good that the edits are undetectable.

Andy has two choices: Strip the metadata, or keep it.

If Andy keeps the metadata, anyone looking at his image can see that it was originally taken by Bob, and that Fiona never ran over a child.

If Andy strips the metadata (and if this technology is widely accessible and accepted by social media, news sites, and everyday people) then anyone looking at the image can say "You can't prove this image was actually taken. Without further evidence I must assume that it's faked".

I think spinning this as a tool to fight AI is just clickbait because AI is hot in the news. It's about provenance and limiting misinformation.

Happened at my workplace. An phishing email went out to test how likely people were to click the link.

Anyone who clicked the link had to take phishing training. Anyone who forwarded it to our internal "hey this is a phishing email" service also had to take training... because the internal service would automatically click the link.

In TNG, Picard says that the Federation has evolved past a need for money. Indeed, we never see any.

In DS9 though, Quark talks a lot about bar tabs and costs. Surely O'Brien and Bashir don't get free drinks, so how do they pay? I'd assume that any Ferengi worth his lobes won't accept anything that can be replicated, so do Federation officers get a stipend of tradeable "value" when interacting with cultures that still expect payment?

I think there's also a reference to Quark paying rent to Sisko for running the bar. Presumably that's denominated in latinum. I wonder where it goes? Maybe the secret "Garak black ops" fund.
