The point of the comparison is that the two aren't actually alike in scale though. Stubbing your toe and getting shot are both painful but it would be odd if someone with a gunshot wound was loudly complaining about their stubbed toe.

I think it's more likely they're just a USian, they deliberately elect these kinds of governments over and over.

I mean maybe it's just an American values thing but I actually don't think scientists are as bad as Epstein associates.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah having talked with people I know who work in schools since last night I think there's a good chance they are hoping to just intimidate this into stopping. Might be really difficult to explain why anything more than marking students absent happens in response to this if they walk off school property.

Assuming you decide to meet with them, here's some things that occurred to me.

  1. Have you been documenting the things they've said to you? Are they communicating in digital/written formats? Having those receipts will be useful if you decide to try to take this show more public, or to threaten it.

  2. You are in a tough spot, they have the power to keep you off the premises ~~and the legal right to do so~~ as I understand it. (Edit: talked to my partner, I understood wrong, there's a good chance they're bluffing apparently). However you have something they want, and that they can only get from you. They want this to blow over, you can figure out what that means to them and bargain with them about it. It almost certainly doesn't mean headlines where a promising high school senior isn't allowed to attend graduation because of their political views. Take their offer to 'resolve the conflict' seriously, I strongly suspect they want this to go away in the least obstructive way they can get it.

These people also weren't born yesterday, there's a reason they're doing the same thing to you that they did to your friend- getting you alone makes it easier to get someone in a key position to flip on important demands. Meeting with them is an opportunity for both sides to try to get what they want in a less confrontational way, and the admin folks have experience talking young people into the correct position. If you agree to meet you will want to have a game plan with your parents and clear red lines you are not willing to cross, guiding principles to keep you from getting derailed in talks. But think hard about what those lines are, because if you get totally boxed out of campus and away from the people you're helping organize that's not really a win for you. Some things might need to be compromised on for the sake of bigger goals.

  1. Assuming these people are mostly liberals, they see themselves as valuing speech and civic participation. They believe they want to train the next generation to be conscientious involved citizens. Exploit that belief. You want to express yourself. You have strong political beliefs. There is almost certainly some version of group expression they would accept, if/when you meet ask them what they think is an appropriate way for students to advocate for their political views. Show you're interested in getting your views out there and that you are willing to assess the merits of different ways of doing that.

If their proposal is not acceptable to you, allude diplomatically to points 1 and 2: You can make this a bigger problem for them, or you can make this go away less painfully for them. Are there alternatives you would accept as a win? Advocate for those, try to propose actions that keep the people you've organized on side but will be more tolerable to the admin if they won't budge.

  1. As difficult as they are being, you will get further if you seem like you're operating in good faith and being reasonable. Insist on things that you can pitch to liberals, appeal to values you know they believe themselves to hold. They have cards here, they have the more or less unlimited capability to keep you off premises. You have cards too, play well and I think you can negotiate something, which will demonstrate you're serious to the admin and also make them less afraid of you and what you might do because you're behaving in a way they understand.

Good luck, comrade. I join everyone else here in admiring your work and commitment.

Hey, so there are two things that stick out to me.

First, you are not a failure and you should be proud that you have acted according to convictions you feel so strongly. You are familiar with conditions on the ground so take my perspective with caution because you are in a better position than I am. That said I would encourage you to try to get in the head of the school admin. They are (most likely) not ideologically Zionist, they are probably trying to keep the lid on a situation that brings them a lot of attention and gives them extra work. Most people in the imperial core are not actively thinking about these things because they are not conscious of them like you are. There will still be tension of course, but they do not want to crush you or hurt you (again, most likely, you are there and I am not) they just want things to blow over quietly.

And second, I would encourage you to think strategically about this. You are heavily invested in this project, and that might be affecting how you are analyzing the situation. You have in fact accomplished something impressive: You have a bunch of your classmates paying attention to news and listening to a perspective that is driving them to action as well! You are, in fact, already organizing them. So there is a tactical decision here, as I see it. You can, and perhaps should, continue confronting the administration with these moves that they are working to stifle. But that's not the only thing you can do. You can continue educating your peers, you can lead a book club or discussion session or platform other perspectives to help them grow.

Put another way, don't let the administration set the terms of what you are able to get your peers to do. If their resistance to one approach becomes overbearing you have the ability to pivot to something else without losing your cadre. You have a ton of options, so don't feel like if this particular step is not worth the heat, then you have been defeated. Adapting is good praxis

Finally, I'm sure this is an annoying thing to hear from a stranger, but take care of yourself. I'm sure you're more than aware but this whole thing is to clearly affecting your mental health and your home life. Those are big costs to pay, make sure the things that are causing those pains are worth it. You're ahead of the curve and you clearly have talent in organizing. Don't burn yourself out in school, we need people like you for things that are ahead of us.

It's Fortress Friday! Today we wait for me to finish my turn and for control of the game to pass on to @gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net (please confirm), with the following players waiting for a chance to leave their mark on Dwarven history.

  1. (Beginning Feb. 20) @gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net

  2. (Beginning Feb. 27) @booty@hexbear.net

  3. (Beginning Mar. 6) @Oreb@hexbear.net

  4. (Beginning Mar. 13) @PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net

New players are encouraged to apply in this thread. All players and spectators are welcome to load up the save and see what's going on first hand.

Lore

How to play

Importing the save

Dwarf Fortress saves are not stored in a single file. They are stored as named directories containing over a thousand individual data files. In order to load the game, you need to download a zipped archive of the save and place it in your Dwarf Fortress save directory. This directory can be located in a number of places depending on which OS you are using and what settings you have enabled.

If Portable mode is enabled (not default), the save directory will be located in the same directory as dwarfort / dwarfort.exe. If you are using Steam with the default locations, these are:

On Linux: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress/save

On Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dwarf Fortress\save

This directory might exist, even if Portable mode is turned off (default), but in that case it will be ignored by the game. Instead, save files are stored somewhere in your user directory.

On Linux: ~/.local/share/Bay 12 Games/Dwarf Fortress/save

On Windows: %AppData%\Roaming\Bay 12 Games\Dwarf Fortress\save

Extract the FFSeason1 directory from the archive and place it inside of the appropriate save directory, then you should see it after starting the game.

Stopping the clock

By using a combination of the "Autosave Frequency" (any setting as long as it is not "Off") and "Pause after every autosave" options, you can cause the game to pause at the exact moment the calendar ticks over to 1st Granite (the first day of the year).

After the game pauses, you still have the opportunity to do a couple minor things, like designating blueprint tiles to label hazards, noteworthy sources of material, or leaving graffiti. You can also rename stockpiles and rooms, etc. before writing the final save. You should avoid doing anything that will substantially change the behavior of the fort or generate labor tasks (like creating / removing stockpiles, changing which items are allowed to be stored in stockpiles, enabling / disabling standing orders, creating new work orders, or designating new rooms / meeting areas). Military schedules often change at the start of a season (e.g. the "staggered training" preset). This is fine.

Any blueprints left are merely suggestions. The next player is free to ignore them. If you wanted something built there, you should have microed your miners better :P

Exporting the save

When Dwarf Fortress creates auto-saves, or if you use the "save and continue playing" feature, Dwarf Fortress will write these saves to an alternate directory (e.g. autosave1 or pull the lever). When you finish your turn, you need to use the "Save and return to title menu" option and choose "Save to this timeline." You need to do this even though the game just created an auto-save. This will write the save back to the FFSeason1 directory, which you can then place in a zip archive and submit.

Making your submission.

Save files can be e-mailed to fortress-friday@matapacos.dog ahead of time. Some e-mail services (like Gmail) prohibit sending large enough attachments, but if it works on your end, it should work on mine. Otherwise, the file may need to be hosted using a third-party service. Dwarf Fortress File Depot is the canonical service for this (they have a category specifically for community games), but any service which doesn't require me to create an account or jump through flaming hoops is acceptable. Currently (as of Episode 3), the compressed save is about 58MB. It won't get any smaller with time.

Alternately, submissions can be made as a reply to the following week's Fortress Friday post, which will be posted in anticipation of a submission. This thread will be posted and used to coordinate the game and get the proper files into the hands of the next player regardless of if the anticipated turn was completed.

Whether or not the file was transferred in advance, The player who just completed their turn should make a top-level comment in this thread describing noteworthy events of their turn. You are encouraged (but not required) to roleplay and continue to spin a fantasy narrative out of it, but you don't need to write us a Tolkien novel - especially if you are pressed for time and have other shit to worry about. This shouldn't feel like a homework assignment.

My initial submission will be excessive because I am also covering the results of world-generation, the historical circumstances of the civilization we chose, and the embark. Subsequent posts will mostly be focused on chronicling events in Fortress Mode. You are absolutely not expected to export the world history and spend hours dicking around in Legends Viewer spinning up backstories for every minor goblin who gets turned into dog food.

What if a turn is not completed / running late?

If you anticipate not being able to complete your turn, just let us know (the sooner, the better) so we can make adjustments. Shit pops up. There are more important things in life than a stupid game. We won't be mad at you.

In case Fortress Friday rolls around and there is no submission, Tentatively, I think we give the player 24 hours to actually make their post before we start openly contemplating passing to the next player, followed by another 24 hours to find out which of the next players is actually available. So if there is no update by mid-Saturday, we find another candidate, and if there is no word by mid-Sunday, they are given the green light to play.

What if a turn is completed early?

You can tease us (it's reassuring to know progress is being made), but hold on to your spoilers until Fortress Friday. I think keeping this thing on a regular schedule will do a lot to keep everybody looking forward to updates and keeping things organized. If anticipation is eating away at you, try to fill in some lore and backstory.

Rules

There are not many hard rules, but generally

  • You play for one year in-game time. Turns should begin and end on 1st Granite.

  • Avoid using blatant exploits (the game is built of cheese, so this is sort of like the pornography rule, "you know it when you see it.") Things like perpetual motion machines or material duplication schemes should be shunned. Some things classified as exploits, like "atom smashers" should be fine as long as their applications aren't egregious.

  • Try not to save-scum (Do save though. Crashes happen, and named "save and continue" saves won't clutter the main save).

  • You are free to use DFHack, but do not use any of it's "Armok" (god-mode) features. Also, try to keep it modest. The fort shouldn't fail catastrophically if the next player doesn't have DFHack installed.

EDIT: Sorry for the ping @Moonworm@hexbear.net although you're still welcome to rejoin.

Hey folks! So you can probably tell this isn't the correct thread and the correct format: Our intrepid leader @PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net appears to be indisposed, so in the interim I figured we could still talk about the game, how it's going on our own worlds, and also (potentially) what to do if the expedition leader still has not been seen in a week or something. Anyone who has thoughts about that can start that discussion if you see fit.

Link to previous game thread.

Pings for Enrolled PlayersPlayers: @Moonworm@hexbear.net, @Doubledee@hexbear.net, @gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net, @booty@hexbear.net, @context@hexbear.net, @Oreb@hexbear.net, @Infamousblt@hexbear.net

Below, I'm going to make a little happy post about my solo world. I'd love to talk about the game with anyone interested in joining the rotation, anyone new who has questions, anyone who is curious about mechanics, good world settings, embark prep etc. and I hope other people will also post their stories and forts as well. But of course, no pressure. Everyone's welcome!

The Supreme Court could stop the count and declare a result. They have done that already once.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago

Presumably he will be monitoring the polling and will intervene using his agencies if it looks like things are going wrong. Declare you won, show your evidence for it such as it is, convince your supporters that you're correct and then dare the Democrats to do literally anything to stop him.

Yeah it feels intentional and it makes me uncomfortable.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Where's the part where people are making funny quotes about Tiny Man and stuff? I've been scrolling through the thread to see what you were talking about and haven't found it yet.

Edit: I just searched for the tiny man square part of your quote and this post is the only thing that comes up.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Yeah there's really no room for nuance on some of these topics for some reason. You don't accept the line, a line fed to us by a government we ostensibly don't trust about a sanctioned enemy that it has every incentive to make you dislike, and somehow you are questioning objective reality to defend an authoritarian.

I think it's the sheer volume of anti China consent-manufacturing material that does it. Westerners are just bathing in it constantly.

"And on a scale of green smile to red angry face, how would you rate your experience here at Beardrenched so far?" The human baby glowers back ominously. It feels nothing about seeing the bodies. It feels horrified recalling the ghastly glow of the spectre emerging from the wall.

The silence drags on. Above their heads a hideous scraping sound and the too-familiar wailing of a creature in agony rises to fill the awkward space. The census taker shifts in place, as if looking for an exit.

"Gahgah," the infant finally offers, and gestures at the furious red visage.

The dwarf nods. "Thank you for participating in our mood survey. The Hammer of Reason appreciates your feedback." The creature above shrieks and there is a hollow metallic clattering sound as the items trapped in its chamber are thrown haphazardly into the wall.

"These humans appear poorly adapted to life in the depths," the record keeper murmurs to no one in particular, now seated in their office. Surveying the stack of mood reports it's immediately obvious that no dwarf has reached the red yet, all the worst moods are human. "You'd think the infant could have learned, though."

Isn't there a book about humans in the library? My Thoughts On The Human or something? Maybe we should consult it, see if anything can be done for the guests. Selling their possessions to caravans after they die is demoralizing the remaining cave divers. Apparently humans consider that disrespectful.

A naked humanoid lopes past the doorway, hotly pursued by a fleeing draltha and a gaggle of angry humans. The lead warrior, a scarred bald woman brandishes two hefty volumes, one in each hand. She throws one, Happenings: Principles and Practice at the troglodyte to no effect. The baby wails in fury as it is carried into the fray by its mother, who attempts to bludgeon the naked caveman with her flail.

Down the hall someone yells "Death is all around us! I feel very uneasy!"

With a thud and a click from the shale door the office is closed off from the carnage happening outside. The dwarf returns to their seat and sighs heavily. "It was inevitable," they mutter as they return to their work.

Almost done with my year, it's been an eventful one. Can't wait to share all the happenings.

Hey comrades. I'm not trying to build a crazy body or get jacked or anything, but I'm getting older and want to ensure I'm not neglecting my body so it keeps up as I go. I've been doing pushups 3x a week (got from being unable to do them on level ground to doing a set of 30, 25, 20 with 5 minute gaps, nothing too crazy) but that's all I'm currently doing. I got dip bars to try and add inverted rows to my routine, so here's my questions:

  1. is there a reason I shouldn't just do rows as part of the same 3x a week pushup thing I do?

  2. will it be bad if I alternate, assuming I can't do them both the same day, in terms of maintaining a baseline level of fitness?

  3. are there very easy/no equipment exercises that do not take much time you would include/add for someone in my situation? My partner and I work alternating shifts, and we have children, so it's not really realistic for me to plan to have even an hour where I can do intense exercise away from the kids/go to the gym, part of why I've been doing basically just pushups is that I can drop and do them while I'm in the same room as the kids without leaving them unmonitored.

I know if I was really committed to building muscle mass I would be doing a bunch of other stuff but I can't devote that kind of time, I'm basically asking for the bare minimum "reasonably healthy" routine.

So I bought a car from a relative because I could afford that, they bought a fancy boutique version of this car (Chevy Cruze) that has, by default, 18 inch rims. I live in a shitty midwestern USian city and of course this thing can't handle potholes and the tires leak if you look at them funny. I've been limping along as long as I can but a pothole destroyed another one and replacing these stupid 18 inch tires is expensive. I've had to replace them twice in the last year, it's absurd, and they're of course way more expensive than a normal person tire.

So I'm looking at replacing the entire wheel set so that I can get a 17 or 16 inch wheel with more reasonable and cheaper tires. Is there any reason to be afraid of a certain size or wary of downsizing at all? I go on some site like Tirerack and it looks like I can get a set for a few hundred. My mechanic said this isn't a problem, that the chassis is identical to the less boutique options, but I'm not a car person so I would love a second opinion on this before I spend a bunch of money again. Things to look out for, free wheels (lol), any helpful advice is appreciated.

You'd better.
