As a Brazilian that plays videogame on some LATAM servers, I can say that I can only be so courteous after being called a monkey constantly by my Argentinian teammates.

Some friends reminded me of when Luis Suárez and Messi called Neymar "Conguitos" when playing for Barcelona. So, even at the high level, some of this shit happens.

I like the little VPSs that are available at LowEndBox. Some can be dirt cheap, at about $1/month (paid upfront). They are small, but it's way more than enough for serving a static website. It could also serve RSS, some images, stuff like that, no problem.

As a non-Statesian, I get a lot of angry thoughts and try to elaborate rants in my head, but I can never find something coherent enough to post. Maybe, one day I'll start working it down and see if I can make a nice writeup. For now, you'll have to bear with me the key points of the rants:

• Nowhere in the world the populance can have guns this easily and legally;
• And even to add insult to injury, usually, the most reactionaries love in states where the gun laws are the loosest;
• I do believe that the ruling class believes that they can get away with it because the amount of propaganda, so people don't rebel and can't connect the dots that some violence with proper ML thought could just topple everything;
• And even when someone does connect the dots, either they can't act on it, due to getting on a list, or be assassinated like the Panthers were.

Again, this is too simplistic and too emotion-laden to be a proper analysis, but I believe my sentiment of complicity stems from this.

Now, I think that the US of A won't even be able to copy China's innovations, so there's that.

I believe the sensationalism is her brand mostly for the clickbait. She needs the views and interactions. But it's also, to some extent, her exclusively liberal analysis. And yeah, the conspiracy theory thing is real. She usually flirts with that. For example, the AI data center for biometrics below the new ballroom in the White House might be true, I'll give her that, but the angle on COVID being a bioweapon will always sound like kookery to me. Specially if she can't produce evidence from any of the agencies she does say are involved. And that's what gets me: she jumps to a conclusion when some stuff are just simpler, or even, better explained by "yeah, that's capitalism for you".

To answer many people on the thread, it seems it's the Leiden University's Ranking. It was well circulated in my country for the top university here being in the top three outside China.

Paraphrasing what I read from a few local news outlets, it seems that they use bibliometric data (churning out articles, citations and such), as well as some diversity metrics, such as women in academia favoring a higher ranking than those unis that have worse numbers.

I did not check the method for myself, just because I like the result and didn't bother to check further.

I've been following both posts and looking at this stuff from a lot of people. Some IRL communist friends as well. I always have these two gripes (or three, depending on how it's counted)

• Art is already (profoundly) commodified: Look at the whole Hollywood complex. And, even if you want to be super specific, at animation. Human hand drawn art is already commodified. Look at Magic: the Gathering art. Look at any piece of drawn advertising. I'm not even bringing up photography, photo editing, filmography, 3D modeling, acting and such to the loop. I've read in another comment that the OP has more of a "it's about the sincerity of the art", like, we know that corporate art is (to some degree) soulless regardless of human intent or not. So, automating it would be a good way to take away this burnout-inducing lack of the artist's will. (This last part is written in naïvety, just to bridge to this second part)

• Most arguments liberal artists use are more like labor aristocracy than anything: From what I usually get, at least from my reality and part of the world, people who graduate in or study arts are, usually, people with so much money that they can afford to not ever work to sustain themselves, or are from a proletariat class that is either looking for some economic ascension, but is lost in some romantic thought about the artistic profession. And, again, using my own experience, those are people that like to entrench themselves in such arguments. So, I go with the thought process of the textile industry during the industrial revolution

The final gripe is just a pedantism: please, let's call it image generation. We use AI all the time. Not for LLMs only, but for disease diagnosis, image recognition, text recognition, audio noise suppression, traffic control and so much more. People usually throw the baby out with the bathwater, but it just shows their complete ignorance on the matter.
