Yeah I mean it was completely overrun by spam bots. But I guess McDonalds and Nike were never the beneficiaries of those. So in that way they were corpo-unfriendly. More of a small business libertarian vibe for sure. Boner pills etc.

But you do know that even at its peak usenet was controlled by a small, obscured clique of admins right? It was basically an old boys' club. The whole nerd concept of "benign dictator". Well it was a benign oligarchy.

At least on lemmy you know who the admins and mods are.

i don't use it but for the asynchronous side of stuff there's nncp. it's supposed to be a modern version of uucp, which is what usenet used before the internet. not directly related but it seemed kinda cool ig
