So is the rest of Monaco.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 86 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Well, how much farther away could it realistically be?

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

About a kilometer, if it was on the docks.

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, but why is there a need for an embassy? 🤨

[–] lemmyng@piefed.ca 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Because you need a diplomatic representative inside the jurisdiction.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

To make sure that Monaco’s French residents can continue to evade taxes?

[–] Knuschberkeks@leminal.space 2 points 1 day ago

French citizens livimg in Monaco habe to pay taxes in France. There is some Kind oft treaty vor something.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip -2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But do you?

France is approaching a major budgetary crisis that's causing mass unrest. Yet they are spending money to maintain a building and staff in a small country that would take less than 20 minutes to drive across. They could have the ambassador commute and not bother with an embassy at all

I'm not saying these costs would be enough to fix budget alone, but you have to question how many small things like this could be cut

[–] FundMECFS@piefed.zip 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

True but the real fix is bringing back the wealth tax.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

Absolutely, tax the rich and evaluate expenditures. Both are great imo

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Have the ambassador commute? From a residence presumably unless its an AI ambassador. Then they’d need premises in which to work, and the place the ambassador works is called… an embassy. So your costcutting involves doubling the number of buildings required, plus mileage between them.

A large number of French people work in Monaco. France is responsible for Monaco’s defence. The Monagasque Minister of State is appointed on the advice of the French Government. Monaco is in a customs union with France. All these things require a diplomatic mission.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yes Monaco is like a 5 minute drive or train ride from France. Also where the fuck did you get AI from? You can commute like a normal person.

Doubling the number of buildings? You don't need an embassy there or a building in France. Maybe they can rent an office if need be, but honestly if a French citizen has a problem they can walk the 15 minutes it would take to France.

You don't need a French embassy to handle issues in a country this small negotiate a treaty to handle the simple stuff. Which honestly given the open borders and shared systems its not much that isn't covered.

As for defense that's why I said keep an ambassador. They can be in Monaco daily and attend all important state functions while living across the border in France.

Everything could be handled without maintaining a facility in the country with ease. Stop wasting the people's money.

Actually you make a great point make Monaco pay for it's own defense. It's one of the wealthiest nations per capita in Europe.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So if it isnt an AI, it’s a person, who requires somewhere to live.

if a French citizen has a problem they can walk the 15 minutes it would take to France.

You’re confusing an embassy with a consulate. Embassies deal with governments rather than members of the public.

You underestimate the complexity of diplomatic relations, even between France and Monaco, and suggesting Monaco raise an army and build a navy is not compatible with this plane of reality.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yes the ambassador can rent an apartment or buy a home within commuting distance like the rest of us

So expect France to pay for a nation whose population is 30% millionaires. A country who has no income tax unless you are a French national living there? Seems a bit unfair, they can join Nato and contribute a comparable amount of their GDP like the rest

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

...within commuting distance of what?

You seem to think an embassy is the ambassadors house?

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

They don't need a full embassy, an ambassador will do. Like I said if they insist a small government office can be operated in existing French owned governmental buildings across the border. No need to pay for a large independent facility. The ambassador can commute to attend appropriate talks in Monaco

A full time embassy is asinine for a country with 30k people living in it less than a 29 minute walk from the French border on all sides

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You keep saying commute. Commute to where? "Existing French owned governmental buildings across the border"... that's... that's an embassy

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Do you know where Monaco is? Commute from France use buildings in France. The ambassador can commute for Monaco state events and talks.

An yes this is different, it's different to save cost. Effective outcomes for French citizens will be the same

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So the number of buildings is the same but now it's worse?

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No....

I'm done explaining if you can't count that's on you

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Once again, do you think the ambassador lives in an embassy?

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

No, they recieve free housing in the form of an official residence while living abroad. Something that can be cut by a commute.

And before you get hung up on a commute where as I've said an exhausting number of times a commute to attend state functions held by Monaco or diplomatic talks with the Monaco government. All of these would take place in buildings that are owned by Monaco.

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The entire point of an embassy is for you to host things. So you're suggesting they have

  • a place of residence in France for an ambassador
  • a normal place for an ambassador
  • renting expensive facilities in Monaco for special events

Rather than, y'know, using the one they own.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

No....

At this point I'm just going to have to infer you're being intentionally difficult. You seem to be stating the complete opposite of what I've said intentionally

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

monaco is in france and should be taxed by france

vive la fucking revolution, send in the troops

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

This is bad news for Lesotho, Gambia, San Marino, and Brunei.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Probably helps that Monaco is like 100 meters across.

Totally normal country, not at all related to tax evasion purposes

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Imagine a giant tower in Vatican city so every country that wants one could have an embassy.

[–] epicurean_toast@lemmus.org 6 points 2 days ago

I'm very entertained by the idea of an IRL Tower of Babel, where 100+ different languages are represented in one giant tower that was built so everyone could talk to what many regard as God's representative on Earth

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I misread that as Morocco and was very confused for a few minutes.

It used to, back when Algeria was in France

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

I was expecting the boarder to be more like this one between Canada and France

https://travelbetweenthepages.com/2026/04/29/france-and-canada-share-a-border-really/

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If you count the Umayyad Caliphate, there's that...

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It used to. For a while Algeria was considered to be fully a part of France

[–] GuyDudeman@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 8 points 3 days ago

They stamp your passport and then just throw you into France.

[–] visnae@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Wait until you hear about the Italian embassy in Holy Sea located in Rome..

[–] deus@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

*Holy See, but yeah, an Italian embassy inside Rome sounds pretty unnecessary.

[–] 5parky@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Holy sea is where holy water comes from.

[–] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

FWIW, Monaco is the country with the world's highest population density.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Well that's convenient.

[–] bad1080@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you think they commute to work?

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Nah work from home

[–] testaccount372920@piefed.zip 4 points 3 days ago

Pretty neat to have a swimming pool on top

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They should build a tunnel so you dont even have to enter monaco to enter the french embassy

[–] ptitfred@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Maybe they have, you wouldn't know
