General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

The outlet, founded in 2015 at the height of support for the then Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, said in a social media post it would be closing “for the foreseeable future”.

In a statement, the Canary said: “After 11 years, we take this action with deep sadness and regret. The extent of the lies, defamation, and harassment by ex-staff – coupled with the constant attacks by the state and those who’d see us destroyed – has become too much.”

However, some journalists at the Canary have said they believed the outlet’s banking issues had been used to distract from wider financial mismanagement. They claim that additional funding received over the summer – believed to be more than £2m – had been squandered on projects including a short-lived newspaper and the purchase of other websites.

Good

I kept seeing their links and they always felt off.

They're basically what you'd get if pro-Palestine activists that go to marches made a newspaper. Very emotionally driven and a little prone to conspiracy theories.

I read a few of the articles. They were ok.

More like a VI-form student newsletter. Full of piss and edginess but not very wise.

Not prefect, but The Canary offered something that might have been lacking in wider political news sources. There is a lot of space for emotional and catastrophising right-wing opinion - its a shame that the centre and left are largely missing (and yes, yes, the BBC is obviously a state-funded far left extremist pro-Corbyn mouthpiece aimed at disabled lesbian trans people - but apart from the liberal lefties at the BBC, the voices we hear from within the BBC and our news media in general, are often right leaning).

Since most of the staff walked out in the spring, it’s become increasingly shrill and deranged. Pretty much everything became a zionist false flag operation in recent weeks. Someone was having a mid-life crisis.

I assumed they were around a lot longer than 2015. So they were basically set up as a vehicle for Jeremy Corbyn?
