Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That sounds as a quote lifted from cinema or anime. And my intuition tells me it is but I can't recall it.

It's from the into to the Warhammer 40k mechanicus video game https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WyK7lX4sk0c

[–] tb_@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Sure, I'll watch it again

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Chemical people, biological people,... now we just need nuclear people for the trio.

[–] microcapybara@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

I have a nuclear family if that helps?

[–] cally@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Physical people, mathematical people... philosophical people? Metaphysical people..?

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I can see it now

The trans agenda is now seeking a WMD triad, think of the children!!!

[–] decayedproton@beehaw.org 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Maybe trans people should call themselves corporations. Then (redacted) would have no choice but to think of them as people.

Hijacking this for a personal question; how do you all pronounce "cis"? I've always assumed it sounded like sister, sis. But I've heard it pronounced kiss as well.

[–] Miisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

But I've heard it pronounced kiss as well

WHAT? NOOO 😭
You're joking right? That's some GIF/JIF stuff right here 😭😭😭

You're right, it is sis, just like sister.

[–] BevsDad@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 week ago

True but kiss man doesn't sound half bad either 👀

I'll add it to the list of funny gender stuff that could annoy people alongside m'theydy.

[–] dethedrus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

I was already on edge with the hard K sound being implied, but now you have to bring up GIF/JIF?!?!

You monster!

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 6 points 1 week ago

Did no one do high school-level chemistry? Cis/trans isomers?

[–] Devial@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's pronounced as in "sis". It's an existing prefix, that has been used in technical terms to mean "on the same side" long before it came colloquial for AFAB Women/AMAB Men, and that is the correct pronunciation (same goes for the prefix trans, which is the antonym to cis, e.g. trans-fats and cis-fats)

People who pronounce it kiss do so because they were introduced to the word in written form, and had to guess/intuit how it's pronounced based on spelling.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

But I’ve heard it pronounced kiss as well.

english needs to go back to fucking runes until you people get that shit right.

im mechanically a woman

Chemical People sounds like a good name for a band or other music-related thing like an album title

Also, hey I don't even take hormones yet but I have a brain and that's biological

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

And there's the Chemical Brothers, too.

[–] SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 1 week ago

My Chemical Romance takes another, new, meaning.

[–] Miisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes. Brain. Biological. Don't worry, also have brain. Am very human, see? Normal human talk to human. Biological :3 /s

Please end me 😭

[–] cally@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, I see we are both, definitely, 100% biological humans—and honestly? We share the human struggle: it's not just daily tasks and upkeep, it's Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill 🫸🪨⛰️. As a living, breathing and thinking human being, I relate to having a brain made up of billions of neurons firing at every instant 🧠✨ (this is me pretending to be an LLM pretending to be a robot pretending to be a human)

[–] Miisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Honestly, that's a good impression 😂
I mean, umm...very human! /s

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Chemical Women is my choice, sounds like a badass punk name

[–] joe@lemmy.today 8 points 1 week ago

Obligatory "well, biology is just applied chemistry"

[–] Tiger_Man_@szmer.info 7 points 1 week ago

the existence of biological women implies the existence of nuclear women

[–] lime@feddit.nu 4 points 1 week ago
[–] Ertain@feddit.online 4 points 1 week ago

I don't like the use of "biological" here, either.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

The most crazy argument is "cis is a slur" it's just so ridiculous.

[–] decolo@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

Magic people voodoo people

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

May I remind you of the Chemical Brothers

[–] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Cis still feels too formal but biological seems to cruel
