Donald Trump's bruising return to the White House has sent many longtime foreign allies scrambling to get their distance, and according to a new piece from The Atlantic, that distance will last long after Trump is gone.

Trump's second term as president has been marked by notable and widespread disrespect toward nations once seen as close U.S. allies. Between his attempts to level massive tariffs against nearly every nation in the world and his frequent breaches of diplomatic norms, Trump has created a hostile global environment in which allies no longer feel safe trusting in the stability of the U.S.

In a new piece for The Atlantic on Tuesday, staff writer Vivian Salama argued that this new dynamic, in which the nations of the world are working to establish a safe distance from the U.S., is bound to become the new normal for years to come, even after Trump leaves office and is potentially replaced by a more traditional, dependable administration.

Because it's not trump.

The whole damned US framework facilitated this little shitheel. And its shown you are not to be trusted, and unfit to operate on an international stage

the global historical situation, does feel a bit like [we the world] obiwan wailing at the birth of darth vader, "you were supposed to be the chosen one", [at america] where the hope was.

maybe we should cease looking for a strongman saviour on the international/global stage, as well as domestically/nationally.

... anyway, that'd be foolish to think it something special and unique to Trump. He's their boy. Puppet does its job.

even after Trump leaves office and is potentially replaced by a more traditional, dependable administration

and wont that be a pleasant placatium to passify the people [in USA?~ agnotological inducement deep enough into insular oblivion sufficient to not be aware that; in the rest of the world?~ no. like the article's main point. But the people there wont likely be sufficiently aware... and so the injustice machine that is the military industrial complex shall continue. unless... ... unless... that "unless" is so tenuously thin now. c'mon americans, you can do it... ]

The only permanent aspect of politics is that nothing is permanent. In the modern age it seems to mean 2-10 years

[–] 0x4f1@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Delegating your security to any other country, like much of the world has done for decades with the US, is never a good idea. Europe did this after WW2 because so much of it was destroyed by war. Allowing the US to continue as their sugar daddy for so long is at least partially on them. Canada is feeling the sting of this too right now.

If a country can't provide for most of its own needs in terms of goods, services and energy, it has no real sovereignty.

The end of an empire ?

[–] Thor_Whale@lemmus.org 11 points 12 hours ago

Look at him salute. He's an embarrassment and no one has the courage to tell him to stop saluting like a drunkard. Plus it's a disrespect to the military and I'm not even a military guy.

America First? America Alone.

You deserve it for by ing an evil empire

I voted blue and donated to contested races as much as I could afford. I am too lazy/socially anxious to canvass or do anything active like that. In my bubble, there was plenty of Kamala hype and even though I didn't believe it, all I could do was ask anonymous online strangers to vote and hope enough of them voted my way. I shouldn't have been surprised at the power of racism and sexism in the country but it was still a shock to the system. In my circles supporting him was utterly unthinkable so I have no explanation on how it happened.

In 2000, the Simpson's episode "Bart to the Future" predicted a Trump presidency that left the economy in shambles for Lisa. It's funny how mild it's foreboding prediction when compared to what his actual presidency has become. I realize his support is tanking, but it's still way too high, specially for a now severely compromised federal system.

The average American citizen wont understand or care about this, and yet I do imagine there are pretty negative long term implications for them, along with all the other garbage being piled onto them.

I brought up that the cost of diesel has gone up massively (particularly at the start of the Iran conflict) and has started to rapidly balloon again to a co-worker at my 2nd job said he did not care about the price of diesel because he doesn't use diesel...

I carefully explained to him that everything is shipped over land is using diesel and this will cause the price of everything to go up and he pushed back again saying "Well everything is going up in price anyway." Its like dude WTF do you even do with people like this? I did not even touch on the expense of using heavy construction and farming machinery also increasing costs of everything...

He described himself once as someone who agrees with democrats on social issues but thinks republicans are better on the economy and I internally was like DUUUUDE THIS IS THE FUCKING REPUBLICAN ECONOMY RIGHT NOW YOU FUCKING TROGLODYTE AAAHAHHAHAHA WE FUCKING DESERVVVVE THIIIIIIIISSSS.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

The only "social issue" he cares about is his tax burden.

[–] Cherries@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Well, if your coworker is that braindead, then he probably won't notice if you start propagandizing to him. Everytime something bad happens, audibly blame Trump and the Republican Party for it. A couple of weeks of that oughta change his opinion of things.

Designed by the bastard Muscovites and used by the MAGA circus. Throw in Project 2025 too.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 24 points 20 hours ago

I always knew conservatives (regressives) would destroy America. I just didn't think it would be so fast and so aggressively stupid.

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 21 points 20 hours ago (7 children)

In the end, the world will thank Trump for freeing them from American shackles. I hope that this is the beginning of the end of US dominance.

[–] rumimevlevi@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

We should not thanks him for unintentional outcome of his stupidity

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Trump is going down in history as the environmental President forcing the world to buy EVs or starve.

[–] KeithD@lemmy.nz 5 points 14 hours ago

forcing the world to buy EVs or starve.

Or possibly "and starve."

I don't get it. This is an article about an article. Why not just link the original article published by the Atlantic?

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 6 points 15 hours ago

I first heard about it via AlterNet, and you need a subscription for The Atlantic.

And with the current trends of openly weaponizing the dollar, I would expect the BRICS to expand and the petrodollar dominance to wane.

[–] wampus@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

The US dollars dominance is largely tied to deals made with places like saudi arabia, which basically make oil trades settle in USD, as far as I've heard at least.

I'm surprised Trump hasn't forced the Trump Cryptocoin to replace it for international settlements. Maybe that's a year three fiasco that they've got waiting on the sidelines. The US's push for approved 'stablecoins' to enter markets is basically along the same lines, pushing for a thinly veiled "independent" virtual currency to become the default, while still maintaining control over it in the USA.

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

Who knew that building a pattern of attacking your allies could lead to your allies not trusting you any more?

Breaking news: humans are carbon based lifeforms

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (8 children)

The only way we can even begin to fix this is if the entire Trump crime family & their enablers are indicted & incarcerated. The entire cabinet belongs in prison or in RFK Jr's case, executed for innumerable counts of Depraved Heart Murder.
